5th Grade “Think Out Loud” Interactive Math

“Think Out Loud” has been a successful tool in my quest for students to become independent learners. Now, having added many interactive tech-friendly resources, the kids are more excited, enthused and engaged—and it shows in their understanding of math! It is truly Hi—Powered Mental Math! “Think Out Loud” is an interactive PowerPoint designed to keep the students focused on math problem solving. You will see them talk to each other about math as they quickly engage “in the math moment.” Kids respond with, “Can we do it again?” and “What else can we teach?” Whether high or low achievers, students will become confident speakers about math. They will all want a turn at solving a problem. You will all love the spontaneous discussion. Students will be encouraged to make mental pictures of the numbers, the word problems, the models, and how they fit together. This activity helps with computation and math fluency. It’s important to keep the moment positive. Let your kids know they are not being judged, they are being encouraged to try. It’s fun! TALK-THROUGH-ERRORS STRATEGY: WRONG ANSWERS give you the opportunity to help the student stretch to reach the right answer. Give the student these options: Take a thoughtful guess. Ask for a hint. Have a friend whisper a clue. Do a group huddle. Then discuss how they reached the right answer. Show that errors and mistakes are paths to the right answer and math mastery. Be sure everyone succeeds. The enthusiasm is contagious. “Think Out Loud” math is designed to help all learners: Make sense of math! Deepen reasoning about math! Communicate about math! Apply accuracy in computation! Build confidence as mathematicians! MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. MP4 Model with mathematics. MP6 Attend to precision. Everything is included for QUICK SETUP AND EASE OF USE. Just plug in and go! Try this out with your class! Be sure everyone succeeds. The enthusiasm is contagious. “Think Out Loud” math is designed to help all learners: Make sense of math! Deepen reasoning about math! Communicate about math!
