Mary Celeste Project

(0)
This is a 9 page homework project about the Mary Celeste - ideal for year 5 and 6 children. It could be completed in class or given as homework. It includes four separate writing activities. -a letter -a speech -a log book entry -a report / letter Excerpt: TASK 1 – A Letter to His Brother As Benjamin Briggs, you decide to write a letter to your bother – Oliver. Like you he has also invested all of his money into a ship. His ship is called Julia A. Hallock. Both brothers had considered retiring as captains and thought about going into business together. In hindsight this was a mistake, but at the moment Benjamin Briggs is looking forward to the journey he is about to make - even if he is a little worried about the ‘curse’ on his ship. Make sure that think about the following things:. a. Think about how to set out an informal letter. b. Explain why you are writing. Each activity includes advice to help the children improve the quality of their writing.

Kensuke's Kingdom Writing Project

This 5-page project could be used for homework after reading the book. This is written in a lively way to engage and motivate the children. The focus is to identify the ‘writer’s craft’ and the questions will help the children to answer some of the more challenging questions on the SATs. At the end the children choose one of three writing activities based on the book and try to put what they have learnt into practice.

Year 5 and 6 Spelling / Word List Booklet

This creates a very useful A5 booklet when it is double-sided and folded. It has all the year 5 and 6 words in alphabetical order - with boxes next to them which can be used in various ways. -These could be used at home or school to check the number of times the pupil has spelt each word correctly. -The children could use the boxes to keep a track of how many times they have used the words in their written work. As we all know, the children can often get the spellings right in a test - but not in their work! This could help to address this issue and widen their written vocabulary. BUNDLE Buy the HFWs, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 booklets together and save 50%.

Out of the Ashes by Michael Morpurgo Reading Journal

This journal has 24 questions that focus on using inference and deduction rather than basic recall. If you double side the four pages, it will fold to create an A5 booklet in the right order. I avoided asking questions after the point in the story when the family have discovered that the disease is on their farm. The idea is that the children read the last few chapters uninterrupted and then explain briefly on the final page how the story ended.
