Celebrate the rich culture of Mexico and the significance of Cinco de Mayo with these self-portraits showcasing the traditional clothing and instruments of Mexico. The student will depict themselves dressed in a traditional serape poncho and sombrero that they will design using paper, pom-poms, strings and other various materials as the hands of their self-portrait hold functional mini maracas that make noise when they are shaken with the Mexican flag colors of green, white and red inside of each maraca. They will also learn how to say and write some Spanish words associated with this celebration. They will make Easter themed puppets of either a bunny or a chick and add on 3-D materials such as cotton balls and feathers to add detail. The puppet will hold a biography Easter egg with their name and personality traits. This is a character that will be completely conceptualized by the students themselves. Thankful Multi-Tiered Family Totem Pole and Book

The students will learn about the role that totem poles played for the Indians to tell the story of the tribe’s lineage from one ancestor creature to the next. The Native Americans believed that they were descended from different animal species. The students will conceptualize and design their own family tree totem poles by picking out animals that represent their family, drawing and assembling them onto the base of a recycled material – the paper towel roll. They will also use mixed media and found objects to add in the details. They will do this in honor of National Native American Heritage month for November. For the latter part of the project, they will experience how to assemble, write and illustrate a book based on what they are thankful for to honor the meaning of Thanksgiving. Students will be able to demonstrate and form their own interpretation of a monster in the views from multiple angles cubism style of Pablo Picasso from their imagination by practicing the art of collage- drawing, cutting, arranging and designing each piece of the monster to complete the puppet for this mixed media project. Pablo Picasso’s birthday was on October 25, 1881 and this project will also be done to celebrate and honor the artist with a fun Halloween theme. The students will sharpen their fine motor skills in this activity that involves sketching and precise cutting with the scissors as well as their ability to arrange the pieces in an order that is pleasing to their eye to complete the portrait.
