This is a STEAM unit for middle school science that contains template pages for a "Save the Cacao Plant (NGSS LS3.A, 3.B, 2-4), an engineering design process to invent a candy bar and an art project to create a candy wrapper based on the science of color in marketing. This STEAM unit contains templates for three distinct, integrated projects. n 1816 Mary Godwin (Shelley) and poet-philosopher Percy Shelley traveled to Geneva, Switzerland to spend the summer with their friend Lord Byron. They whiled away their time on the waterfront boating, writing and talking late into many summer nights. This was the summer in which Frankenstein was conceived. Research suggests that Mary, Percy, Lord Byron and Byron’s guest, physician and writer, John Polidori, decided, at the suggestion of Lord Byron, to have a competition to see who could write the best supernatural story. It seems the summer was rainy and the group spent many hours amusing themselves reading German ghost stories and were thusly inspired. Shortly thereafter Mary Godwin had a waking dream and Frankenstein was born. Mary was 19-years-old. Also, born of the same competition was the most famous of John Polidori's works: The Vampyre. This story was originally credited to Lord Byron; however, both he and Polidori attested it was indeed conceived and written by Polidori. Before she wrote what was to become a classic of all ages, Little Women, Louisa May Alcott worked as a volunteer nurse in an army hospital during the Civil War. Written during the winter of 1862–63, her active and heartfelt accounts appeared in the newspaper Commonwealth where the friends and families of soldiers read them as a way to get a glimpse of the horrible realities of battlefield medicine. LMA’s Hospital Sketches also provides a window into some of the early roles of women in the military. Writing under a pseudonym, Alcott recounted the vagaries of her two-day journey from her home in Concord, Massachusetts, to Washington, D.C.
