Students use the literature to make notes and then rewrite it using the connectives. I have found this an extremely effective way of teaching them to extract relevant information from text and rewriting it in their own words.

Learning Grids - KS3 Forces, Classification, Compounds, Light, Energy

(0)
Included are Learning Grids for KS3 Forces, Classification, Energy, Compounds Elements and Mixtures and Light This activity is designed to force deeper thinking at all levels, forcing students of all abilities to make links between concepts they have encountered over the course of the topic. This is a highly engaging activity for all which draws on both literacy and content. Each word has a point value ascribed to it, depending on level of difficulty. Students then construct sentences linking as many of the words as they can in a single sentence. They tally up their word score and then move on to producing another sentence. etc. Instructions on how to use the activity with a set of dice is also included. Always ensure that students have access to glossaries or text books so that they can challenge themselves to find the meaning of new terminology or concepts. This is best carried out in pairs, where students can discuss and share ideas.

Ideal activity for all abilities as feedback tasks, revision or homework. Students are given a category (route) that the teacher feels they need the most work on. Students use the tube map and the station brochure, to guide them through the stations and present them with the relevant questions. Differentiate by giving lower achievers a set of cue cards (included) or allow some revision using the revision cards (included) beforehand. Higher achievers can follow the challenge route. The resource is made up of a double sided Trifold leaflet with some activities more challenging than others. I have included each page as a separate file so that it can be previewed more thoroughly for inspection before purchase.

Take your students on a virtual tour of London. Students are issued with a London Underground Map and they follow the tube routes. As they do this they will collect money for each station that they visit providing they answer the question correctly or complete the task! Routes are differentiated so perfectly suited to mixed achievement groups.

Cells and Diffusion Keywords Literacy Lesson (SEN / Foundation)

Objective: To better understand and use keywords in the cells and diffusion topic. Who is it for: Scientists who have poor literacy, recall and spelling skills. Differentiation opportunities: Use the Spiderman Glossary for struggling scientists. What is in the resource? - Spiderman themed glossary comic - Dominoes activity matching key words with definitions - Activity circle with 6 activities. To use this I put students in groups of 3, each student choosing 2 of the activities. Alternatively you could use this as a "hot potato" activity by giving students a set time (3 minutes) to start the task and then they have to pass their work on to the person on their left. They will then continue where the previous student left off etc. - Giant Wordsearch and hidden message - Kinasthetic activity where students have to unjumble a sentence relating the topic. Wherever possible I have included the answers.
