A Year of Bento - Lunchbox Photos for Educational Use

(0)
In Japan there is a tradition that the mothers of children of kindergarten age provide their children with a lunchbox two or three times a week to take with them to school. Usually, these are made early in the morning along with breakfast. A lot of effort goes into making a tasty, nutritious and visually appealing meal that will be put into a small lunchbox called a ‘bento’, which is then wrapped in a colorful cloth napkin. The images in this pack can be used with classes of all ages and backgrounds, and in different ways according to the teacher’s skills and inclinations. Following is a list of the contents and some possible uses. 1. A set of 50 high quality JPEG images that can be printed out for use in games and tasks of many kinds. 2. A 14 page PDF document of the same images grouped into sets of 4 that can be used for bingo, matching or comparison type games. 3. A Powerpoint 14 slide presentation of the same 4 grouped images for demonstration purposes, or classroom quizzes. There are sample questions in the notes section of each slide, which are aimed at kindergarten/elementary level, but can be altered to suit the level of the class. 4. A Keynote presentation for Mac or iPad users, which contains the same 14 slides and information as the Powerpoint. All the images in this pack are copyrighted for personal and educational use.

Shackleton and the Endurance - Keynote

(0)
Keynote is presentation software similar to Powerpoint that is produced by Apple Computer and can be used on a Mac or iPad. Be aware that this is the latest version (2014). Please download the preview if you are unsure if it will work on your computer. This lesson is an overview of the story of Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance during their two years trapped in the wilderness of the Antarctic. The story is told with the aid of a timeline of the expedition in the medium of a Keynote - similar to a Powerpoint presentation but a lot more versatile! There is a need in literature and social studies classes to evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats including visually and aurally. This Keynote Presentation is an engaging way of reaching this standard. The lesson contains; 1. A Keynote which contains 21 slides that tell the story visually, with humorous speech bubbles, and full narration. There is also a short quiz and the last part contains a short online video of a journal entry from a fictional member of the crew. The Keynote can be used by a teacher using a computer or iPad connected to a TV, electronic blackboard or projector. Alternatively, it can be used directly on student's iPads as a self study resource similar to an e-book. 2. A pdf file of materials to use with students, including a one page text outlining the story as well as learning materials for new vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension quizzes and a journal writing exercise. 3. A full set of teachers notes and explanation on how to use the Keynote along with a contact e.mail for enquiries. If you have any questions about using Keynote, please feel free to contact me through TES. Halloween History - Graphic Reader and Video

(0)
My aim in creating this graphic reader is to provide a concise, clear and interesting introduction to the history of Halloween, from it’s roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain through it’s mixing with and absorption by other religions such as the Roman festivals of Pomona and Feralia and the Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls’ Day through to the customs it has taken on in the modern era such as trick or treating and others. I’ve also added ‘odd facts’ about Halloween to each page to add some humour to the subject. RESOURCE CONTENTS 1. An eleven page PDF color version of the graphic reader and a second set of word and review quizzes for each of the five pages of the text. This can be used on iPads or any other electronic device as a slide show or in a book reader. 2. The same PDF comic in black and white for easy printing. 3. Three sets of writing prompts to extend the topic. The first is a timeline summary exercise of the history of Halloween. the second is a set of story prompts to write Halloween animal themed horror stories. The third is a set of essay prompts for writing a comparative essay between the customs of Halloween and other similar worldwide festivals such as Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’, China’s ‘Hungry Ghost’ and Japan’s ‘Obon’. 4. There are also some simple word games such as a word search, cross word and hangman for students to review some of the language used in the text. The first two are PDF prints. The hangman game is html with a link for the teacher that can be give to students who have suitable devices. 5. Teachers notes page. 6. As of October 16th 2017 I have added a youtube animated video to this which teachers can use as an introduction, review, or students can access on their own devices. The Raven - Animated Text Video

This is a silent movie of Edgar Allen Poe's, 'The Raven'. It takes the form of an illustrated presentation with animated text and pictures. There is a suitable musical background but no recitation of the poem. It was made using Apple Keynote software before exporting to video. The video is in m4v format and is 8 minutes long. This resource is suitable for use as an introduction to the poem. It can also be used in the classroom or on students notepads/laptops to learn about the poem, practice recitation, or research various aspects about the poem, including new words, tone, assonance, internal rhyme and historical references. For those who have access to Apple products I have also included the first two stanzas of the poem in the original Keynote format, which can be used as a teacher's aid. I am offering this video at a low price for a short period of time, and will add the full Keynote version of the poem later. Earlier, if anyone requests it. The short Keynote is 7 slides long. The full Keynote (coming later) has 42 slides.
