I made this fun booklet for my KS2 pupils to practise maths in a ‘real life’ situation based on planning a Christmas party for 200 KS1 pupils. After completing this task, the children actually did plan a party for KS1! They were amazed at the actual cost of the items and gained a real insight into planning for an event. There are 7 tasks in total with a task summary table for pupils to record their summaries at the end of each task. The pupils have a budget of £400 and must make decisions based upon their budget and costs of items such as food and entertainment. Task 1 Party timetable – working out a timetable around set times. Task 2 Total cost of food for 200 children. Percentage and fraction of children’s votes for a particular buffet type. Cost per head and total costs. Task 3 Total number of tracks for the whole party. Numbers of tracks for the dancing sessions using multiplication and addition skills. Task 4 The cost and name of the cheapest show. Calculating the actual costs of two shows plus extras and deciding on the cheapest option. Task 5 Total drinks cost for 200 children. Options for drinks and total costs. Task 6 The cheapest option for party hats Task 7 Total cost of all prizes.

KS1 A fun Pirate themed powerpoint lesson. Secret Agent Academy is a lesson (s) set in a ‘real’ stolen goods context where pupils are ‘trained’ for a special mission to catch a pirate villain. They create Agent Code Names and numbers, work as part of an Agent Cell, and take an oath of secrecy. Their mission consists of 4 main tasks which include cracking reverse alphabet and number codes, Maths number problem solving challenges and a geography map/flag challenge. Slides 2-9 include a simple introduction to ‘what is a code?’ followed by a chance to practise cracking simple words using a reverse alphabet code before pupils enter the Secret Agent Academy. Their mission consists of 4 tasks which include cracking Substitution and Caesar codes linked to Maths problem solving challenges (equivalent numbers, comparing fractions with different denominators, sequences, missing numbers and ordering, patterns and calculations). Slides 2-9 include an introduction to cracking codes and a go at deciphering a real code sent by Mary Queen of Scots before pupils enter the Secret Agent Academy. Year 6 Arithmetic Practise Paper. This resource is a full arithmetic practise paper based upon the actual 2022 SATs paper. It consists of 36 questions covering the full range of questions that would be expected on a SATs test paper. I have used a similar layout to ensure the children get used to the format. Useful to assess which children struggle with particular types of questions and their application to enable some extra input before the actual test day.
