A revision power point I have put together to use with foundation paper Y11 students for their final lesson before the paper 1 exam. I have tried to cover something from each topic (atomic structure, bonding, acids and alkalis, electrolysis, extracting metals and exo and endothermic reactions). I did demos of burning magnesium, acid + bicarb, lead nitrate + potassium iodide.

I used this as a revision lesson at the end of the unit, but would work equally well as a follow up lesson after teaching atomic structure. Designed to introduce a low ability/SEN class to chemistry. Demo group 1 metals in water and potassium iodide + lead nitrate to spark interest. They then carry out their own investigations to find out about the properties of some chemicals and their reactivity. Worksheet included for them to record all their observations/results.

Introduction to the structure of the atom, using the periodic table to find information and how we know that a chemical reaction has happened. I did three demos in this lesson showing three different ways we might know a reaction has happened and this generated lots of discussion. The worksheet gives the reactions for the demos and gives the class tasks for each reaction (e.g. identify the elements and compounds in the reaction).

Discusses the exam question, command word and what this means and key words. Covers the knowledge that students need about density to be able to understand the topic and answer questions. There is practice for students at each stage. Finally students answer the question, look at success criteria and mark using model answer.

Students are then guided through the steps that they need to be able to answer question on chromatography including: what it is how it works the method calculating Rf values There is practice for the students at each step. A method with space for explanation of importance is included.
