Extract question looking at how Shakespeare presents bravery and courage in given extract and in the play as a whole. Students are asked to consider these themes for the whole play and then look at the extract specifically. Using questions relating to different parts of the extract, students gradually build up an understanding of the extract. They can then begin to plan or write an answer.

Please note: this resource assumes you have a copy of the Anthony Horowitz retelling of this story. This is a fun and engaging couple of lessons on the story of Glaucus and Scylla (the one where gets Circe to change Scylla so that she loves him but actually changes her into a monster). Starter activities include a Greek Goddess memory game and a look at the symbols of some of the goddesses. Students then imagine what they would like to control, if they were a Greek god or goddess and design a symbol to represent their power. Following this, there are language activities looking at the writer’s use of words and phrases and sentence forms (as in Language Paper 1) when introducing the character of Circe. Then an examination of the language techniques used to describe Scylla’s transformation.

These are a selection of activities to compliment the reading of this wonderful book by Mark Lowry. I did this with my LA Y8s and they really loved it. I would say that Y7 and 8 would be most suited to this book and these activities. Mark Lowry cleverly works in poetry to this story so it is ideal to dip into poetry alongside enjoying this story of two brothers. Included are activities on Haiku and Limericks, plus some non-fiction relating to dolphins and persuasive writing.

Each contains an extract from which pupils have to identify the writer’s techniques. Then, pupils can plan their own description using a themed given image. Planning boxes are provided to help. They can then self assess, looking for the skills they identified earlier in their own descriptions. Can be used one worksheet at a time or printed off as a booklet. The second resource in this bundle is a work booklet which offers a range of structured tasks based on several fictional extracts with the purpose being to identify and be able to use the following skills: interesting vocabulary, simile, lists,adjectives, metaphor, short sentences, pathetic fallacy, opening sentences with a simile & personification. Two lessons that can be delivered remotely, or face to face. Looks at Brooke’s life and how his lack of battle experience influenced his perception of the war, a focus on Brooke’s use of natural imagery by matching up images to quotations in ‘The Soldier.’ Student investigation into whether the poem is a sonnet, using a set of given criteria. Lesson 2 provides a range of questions for students, with answers for teachers, that look at a range of methods used and their effects. Final task asks students to find a piece of music that matches the tone of the poem.

All three lessons use TEAL (technique, evidence, analysis & link) as a framework but this could easily be edited out / changed. All lessons aimed at middle to higher ability students. In the Can by Rosie Jackson is a one stanza poem that tries to convey life in prison. Tasks start with a collective memory exercise (see slide notes) then moves to reading poem followed by group work on allocated extracts. Eventually, after student feedback, they will write their own TEAL paragraph using example provided. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost - students read poem and answer a series of questions (with suggested answers provided). Leads to writing a TEAL paragraph with a set of given prompts. Booklet of example war poems - pupils can choose which one to write a response on but can first look at how to annotate in detail at the examples given from ‘Dulce et Decorum Est.’ Example response provided.

Wondering what quotations to suggest your students learn for their exam? Here are fifteen carefully chosen quotations. Some include the ‘obvious’ ones but others are chosen to show the examiner that your students can select more judiciously. They can be edited if you wish and printed out to be stuck on walls for revision or on classroom walls. Each slide comes with an explanation of the quote with key terminology to help students understand its relevance. There are also suggested exam questions which each quotation might be useful for answering. There are similar resources on An Inspector Calls, Macbeth and Blood Brothers available in my shop.

This lesson looks at the important character of Macduff and the theme of loyalty. Using the extract where Macduff discovers King Duncan’s body, students can work through questions that guide them through key ideas. Key quotations from the extract are provided with opportunities for students to analyse them first before being given suggested answers. An example paragraph is provided for the first bullet point of the essay. Then, three key quotations are suggested for the wider play that show Macduff’s loyalty to his country and his family, as well as to the King himself. Students can then write an analytical paragraph on one of the quotations discussed.

This two lesson resource gives students an example of a story, for which they can discuss what the candidate has done well and what could be improved. Following this they can use the mark scheme included (from the new spec AQA) to award a level / mark. Using this knowledge of what makes a good narrative, the remaining slides give some prompts and advice about how to go about planning and writing a narrative. Planning sheet and suggested titles is included for students to plan according to what they have learned. The actual story could be written by way of extension.
