This aims to further understanding of the working Victorians of the time and to be clear about the differences between the rich and poor. This can be taken further to develop characters and roles, and also used to facilitate descriptive or narrative writing.

A poster containing key images and quotes from the play. In small groups, pupils take it in turns to memorise the poster and the aim is to reproduce it as a group, as precisely as possible. Facilitates discussion of characters, themes and predictions of what the story may be about.
Using Anthony Horowitz's re-telling of the story, these couple of lessons look at the relevance of the four seasons and ask pupils to consider how they affect people in everyday life. This starter activity helps them understand the ending of the story later in the lesson. Following more reading, there is a 'What do we learn about Hades' Q2 type task, with given answers for use with peer or self assessment. Then, students examine Demeter's feelings for her daughter by selecting evidence to support a number of given inferences. After discussion of the ending, pupils are asked to invent a fifth season and a god / goddess to control it.
This lessons allows students to examine a couple of example city guides, written by students, to understand the type of information used in writing one and also to look at the persuasive techniques used. Using given information about the city of Sheffield, students can work individually or in pairs to produce their own city guide.
This resource contains a lesson on using CLAPS (content, language, atmosphere, poetic devices, structure) as either a way of ordering an exam response or using it as a checklist. There is an example response on Remains to read and then several slides asking students to add a linking sentence to the example in order to answer the given essay title. Then groups can work on aspects of CLAPS to produce a response to a question on War Photographer to practice both the concept of CLAPS as a way of responding to a poem and the importance of linking ideas back to the question. An assessment on War Photographer (on conflict) is included, along with a Key Stage 3 marking and feedback sheet which could be used if desired. This feedback sheet contains prompts to help students to DIRT their answers.

Aimed at Y7 and 8, this short scheme aims to introduce KS3 pupils to 6 of Shakespeare’s famous characters/speeches. Ideal for introducing Shakespeare or one of his plays. Students are guided to act out conversations or deliver monologues. All resources included. Would probably take 3 1 x hour lessons in total. Could be extended. Includes Beatrice & Benedick, Malvolio, Lady Macbeth, Don John, Seven Ages of Man and Romeo and Juliet.
Two female poems looking at the use of Nature in poetry of WW1 to contrast perspective. Falling Leaves looks at the futility of war and A Girl’s Song looks at how difficult it can be to accept a loved one has died. Both poets deliver these ideas by personifying nature. Starter is a fill in the blanks activity then looking at Cole’s actual language choices. Then, look at A Girl’s Song using a table to infer how natural imagery shows the poets ideas. Plenary is a paragraph comparing their use of nature to show attitudes towards death in war.
Here is something that is hopefully a bit different. I have provided information and images on 5 capital cities, from which pupils have to describe them using a range of methods. I have included a WAGOLL and an overview of what is expected for each task. The capital cities here are: Athens, Madrid, Paris, Washington DC and Moscow. Easily adaptable and can be printed off as separate worksheets or as a booklet. Suitable for KS3.

Lady Macbeth lesson - focuses mainly on extract but gives suggestions for student independent task looking at whole extract at end.
Macbeth extract to whole gives example question with model response, followed by a second question for independent work.
Copy of poem Remains is provided. First ppt begins with students reading the poem and completing a short quiz. Slides 7 and 8 provide visual or written prompts to enable students to write a detailed summary of the poem, depending on what type of learner they are. Next, students consider how the poem fits into the two themes of ‘power’ and ‘conflict’. Name the technique from the poem quiz followed by step by step writing of analytical paragraphs. Final task is to write one on their own.
Second ppt introduces the idea of CLAPS (context, language, atmosphere, poetic devices an structure). Example paragraphs given for each aspect of CLAPS and students encouraged to link the examples back to the question, to ensure the answer is clear. Teacher can then choose another poem from the anthology for students to look at, using CLAPS to analyse it.
