Build An Atom Atomic Structure Activity

(1)
Students review and practice how to determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons an atom possesses. Students also create Bohr models of three elements from the first six on the periodic table.
Crafting a Scientific Argument: Density

Crafting a Scientific Argument: Density

(0)
Provides practice using the "claim/evidence/reason" framework for crafting a scientific argument. Students are presented with a scenario of 5 blocks of differing shapes, masses, and volumes. After calculating the density of the 5 blocks, students are guided in crafting a scientific argument about whether shape affects density. Can be done as classwork or homework. Can be used to introduce the concept of density or as a formative assessment. Works well in conjunction with a hands-on lab about density.

Acid-Base Scavenger Hunt

(0)
PowerPoint and student worksheet for conducting an acid base scavenger hunt. Can be done as a lab activity in class or as an at-home science activity. The PowerPoint gives an overview of acids and bases, directions for the activity, and safety guidance. The student worksheet contains a review of how blue and red litmus paper work, directions for the activity and a location to record results. Teacher notes include options if red and blue litmus is not available (red and blue litmus paper can be purchased from science supply companies).
Crafting a Scientific Argument Half-Life

Scientific Methods and Measuring Quiz - 2 versions

(0)
Quiz to assess scientific methods and measuring. Includes tools, units, accuracy and precision as well as a short data analysis activity (students are given the data from a white powder lab and have to answer questions about the possible identity of the materials). Two versions, both with answer keys.
Agree/Disagree Statement - Magnetism Formative Assessment

Agree/Disagree Statement - Magnetism Formative Assessment

(0)
Students will use “A & D” (agree and disagree) statements to analyze a set of true or false statements. Part one is students choosing whether to agree, disagree, or identify whether they need more information to decide. Part two asks them to decide they could test their ideas to investigate the statements. These are best used at the beginning of a learning cycle to determine students’ prior knowledge and ideas. It is important to provide follow-up experiences for the students to investigate, particularly when their ideas and the facts don’t mesh.
