Tech Enhanced Activities - Developing Gist Reading

Tech Enhanced Activities - Developing Gist Reading

This is a gist reading activity that can be used with any text that is suitable for the level of the students. You just need to have a computer with a data projector and an internet connection. Developing gist reading can be a challenge in the paper dependent classroom. Even when you set a time limit and try to push students to read quickly it’s hard to stop them checking vocabulary that they are unsure of. In this activity the use of a cue-prompter helps to control the speed at which the students read. This gives the teacher control of the reading speed and helps push students to read for gist.

Tech Enhanced Activities - Grammar Speed Test

In this activity students answer a number of multiple choice grammar questions and gamble imaginary money. They can gamble more or less money depending on how sure they are of the answer. This is an enjoyable way for students to test their understanding of grammar. Because this activity simulates gambling, you should think about whether it is culturally appropriate for the age and type of students you teach.

Tech Enhanced Activities - If it Were My Home

This activity uses an information comparison site to supply students with data about different countries and help them compare it to their own country. The information the students discover is quite serious so this isn’t a suitable activity for younger learners, but the information can lead to some interesting discussions about perceptions of other countries, immigration and other issues related to social justice.
