I love resources that ensure all pupils are able to access & feel confident within lessons. It makes me sad when a pupil feels stressed because they don't get it. I love hearing a pupil say "I am on it miss". All resources for main part of lessons are differentiated to 3 if not 4 levels of progress. Starters are mixed ability so that I can get pupils to feel confident in areas they struggle on. Any queries please email me; shacostello@gmail.com

Area _ Volume of trapezium Thoughts and Crosses

Area of trapezium moving from basic to problem solving and then moving to volume of trapezium. Kids are in pairs and play against each other to get connect four. I make all learners write their full workings into their books. Learners enjoy the activity and it is great for discussion of where they got their answer from.

Christmas Quiz (Chrismaths Quiz :))

(1)
Attached is a basic PPT for a lower ability class in KS3. It goes through number facts and a movie at the end of each round. Pupils are placed into groups - no more than 4 per group as people start to disengage, you can give each pupil a job to ensure all are working. All should have working out paper. This is a great way to encourage group mathematical discussion and pupils working together. 4 rounds - 5 questions each and the best team with the most points at the end wins a maths piece of equipment. Q4 is the same on all rounds as it was something my class found difficult, some serious misconceptions around adding unlike terms in maths.

Resource; Fractions four operations - Thoughts and Crosses. 8 questions of adding fractions, 8 questions of subtracting fractions, 8 questions of dividing fractions, 8 questions of multiplying fractions. This is a fluency task - an engaging activity to get pupils to practice the four operations of fractions. Contains; 1. 32 questions on thoughts and crosses. 2.Cross Curricular link encourages literacy with the pupils, pupils speaking to each other and explaining to how solve problems (this is a massive focus in our school). 3. 32 answers provided. 4. Set of instructions to ensure the task runs smoothly. 5. Printable version – white version. 6. Please download file and ensure you don’t just drag and drop to google drive as this can cause issues with the viewing the file. Printing Tip: This resource has been designed to display on board or print on A4. If you wish to print select ‘shrink’ or ‘print to fit page’ (or fit to page option on your print settings) in order for it to print correctly on A4. Tip 2: You could laminate and reuse for other classes. This could be printed in colour and used over and over again. Saving you time and money on the printing costs. File Type; PDF Idea behind task; To develop pupil’s mathematical discussions and thinking/reasoning skills. To encourage pupils to think about what they are writing down in the exam. By speaking to their partner it means their explanation and answers must make sense. Good practice for the exam to ensure they show full working out and to check their answer makes sense. GCSE 9 - 1 New specification; Mind the gap (wk 2) quiz for foundation calculator!

(1)
Mind the gap resource - based on the new 9 - 1 GCSE. Based on EDEXCEL style paper questions, I have produced a mini whiteboard quiz/paper quiz as a starter for lessons to get pupils earning those easy marks throughout the paper. Each quiz has a questions slide and then the answers are provided also. I tend to get pupils to mark their questions at the end of each slide to ensure they can see they are making progress. I often use at the start of a revision session or during drop down days to get pupils engaged by having a competition board and the winner is the pupil who scores the most points - earning themselves a prize. I find that pupils need repetition - perfect practice, makes perfect. So I have produced 5 mind the gaps, same skills addressed in each one with different figures. This builds confidence with my pupils as they can see the progress they have made from the start of the week to the end of the week. Based around paper 2 calculator - foundation skills. I really appreciate reviews and feedback, I aim to develop constantly and love to ensure my resources are up to date and differentiated to all ability levels but like we are with our pupils and classes, please do try to be constructive!  @ onitmaths@gmail.com Terms of use; Please use only by the customer paying for the resource.

By the time pupils get to starter 5 they should feel like they have made progress with those specific skills that week. Show answers at the end of each slide and pupils can self or peer assess. Pupils usually in my class use red pen to mark their own work. Terms of use; Please use only by the customer buying the resource

Long Multiplication Resources; Tick or Trash & Thoughts and crosses

(1)
Tick or Trash - basic long multiplication questions for those pupils who are struggling or need consolidation task. Instructions on task. Differentiated long multiplication thoughts and crosses. Can be used as a worksheet or a thoughts and crosses. Pupils work in pairs. Pupils aim to get a connect four – this can be straight across, diagonal or straight up the sheet. Creates really good discussion around each question. Both pupils complete each question – the person to choose the box wins the box if they get it correct but if they do not get it correct and their partner gets it correct they win the box. First to get connect four - wins. Pupils can also complete as a differentiated worksheet. Pupils can choose between red (foundation, fluency), amber ( little bit harder- the application of the skill), green (secure in the topic being taught, starting to solve problems) and blue (exceeding – pupils can work with skill taught in various contexts, reasoning). Pupils show the questions, working out and answers that they have attempted in their class book. Once pupils have spent however long you wish for them to work on the task. The solutions are provided so that pupils can see how much progress they have made. Terms of use; Please use only by the customer paying for the resource.

RAG catchphrase, Red easy going to purple which is hardest. Something to engage pupils and get them answering as many questions as possible while challenging themselves. Pupils complete as many questions as possible moving them from easy (the red task) to amber (little harder) and then green. My class really enjoyed guessing the catch phrase after the task was complete. Works a treat to get more challenging classes engaged. Instructions and printable copy included. Expanding a single bracket thoughts and crosses

Expanding a single bracket thoughts and crosses

(1)
Differentiated resources. Starts off on foundation (Red) - expanding basic expressions - but moving on in difficulty even in the red section. Fluency questions. Developing (Amber) - expanding expressions when two terms in and introducing more negatives. More complex fluency questions. Secure (Green) - Expand and simplify moving on in terms of how many negatives are introduced. Exceeding (Blue) - problem solving and developing thinking - constructing expressions and expanding them with written problems and shape. Pupils demonstrate they are confident with expand and simplify. Answers included. Great resources to keep pupils engaged, can be used as a PPT presentation, Worksheet or I like to use as a thoughts and crosses - pupils play rally coach talk each other through how they got the correct answers and coach the other person if they wrong. First person to get connect four wins points on the system.

Factorising Simple Expressions (RAG Task)
onitmathsonitmaths

Factorising Simple Expressions (RAG Task)

(2)
Resource: Differentiated Task on Factorising Simple Expressions. Red ( foundation Stage) ; Basic style factorising ( 3x + 6, -2x-4) Amber (Developing Stage); still quiet basic ( for example: a squared + 12a) Green (Secure Stage); Factorising simple expressions with confidence - squares and cubes in both terms etc. Idea behind tasks; This task is to address a gap in knowledge for many of my foundation pupils with factorising expressions. They often get no marks when it includes a square or they start off correctly and then mess up the bracket. This is to really hammer home the style of question for two marks in the exam that should definitely earn our pupils full marks. Pupils choose which colour they feel confident attempting. If they are really confident they should choose green, the secure option, if they are struggling they should choose the red or amber option (foundation – basic assessment of skill, amber is a little bit harder). Pupils show the questions, working out and answers that they have attempted in their class book. Pupils self assess or peer assess at the end of activity to show themselves how much progress they have made. Answers provided for each stage. Printing tip; Print - fit to page or fill entire page so they only print on A4. Choose this option on your printer. I have changed the background to white to make it cheaper. Expanding a single bracket Treasure Hunt/Loop Cards

(1)
Resource; Expand a single bracket– Treasure Hunt. Could also be used as a Expand a single bracket differentiated loop card resource if it is not suitable for a class to complete as a treasure hunt. I tend to use as a loop card particularly with year 11 for tasks and revision. Contains; 1. 10 amber cards/questions. 10 green cards/questions. 2.Cross Curricular link encourages literacy with the pupils, mathematical discussion in pairs on how to solve problems around the classroom (this is a massive focus in our school). 3. 20 solutions provided within task itself. Each card is beside that answer to make it easy for you to check when pupils say they are finished. 4. Set of instructions to ensure the task runs smoothly. Printing Tip if using as a treasure hunt: This resource has been designed to display around the classroom. You will need one copy (I like to have in colour, but can be black and white) to put up around the room. Print on A4. If you wish to print, select ‘shrink’ or ‘print to fit page’ (or fit to page option on your print settings) in order for it to print correctly on A4. Printing Tip if using as a loop card: You will need a number of copies, depending on class size, one pack per table. You could decide who was completing amber and who was completing green beforehand so you knew how many sets you needed. (I like to have in colour, but can be black and white). Print on A4 but I would shrink, two A5 pages per A4 to save on printing costs. If you wish to print, select ‘shrink’ or ‘print to fit page’ (or fit to page option on your print settings) in order for it to print correctly on A4. Idea behind task; To develop pupil’s mathematical discussion skills. To encourage pupils to get involved, engaged in task. To encourage mathematical discussion within the classroom. Watch pupils get motivated while consolidating learning – quick way to get pupils to engage in task and complete questions in a short space of time. Ensure pupils can expand a single bracket.
