Inquiry based math offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of data analysis ( data is provided) ,volume, fractions, area, geometry, place value and operations., as they plan and build a haunted house using 3d shapes. Research will be necessary as the children have to know the country and culture of where their haunted house will be situated .( in theme parks around the world) This week long , authentic learning activity is great to use any time of the year but particularly fun around Halloween! USA & UK spelling included. I designed this as a part of our complete IB PYP unit of inquiry of How We Express Ourselves, looking into multi-cultural awareness around the world. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found and reasoning as to their plan and design of their team’s Haunted House. Comparing and contrasting each group’s work, helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task A cards are more challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a booklet or in a binder., with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs and class attainment goals. This inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go, perfect for Halloween or all year round. Division I Have Who Has Game

Its an oldie but a goodie! I have, who has is a favourite with my kids. The reason this resource came into being is because we lost a few of the cards I have had for years and years and our game was kaput. Thus my fresh, new and colourful card game helping us to learn our math facts with multiplication and division. Use it for small guided math groups or centres activities. Perfect for 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade students. Try these out for FREE! The multiplication cards in my store are an entire class set, with 36 cards showing multiples and factors to practice our multiplication tables up to 10s. Besides the usual way of playing it across the class, we have been timing ourselves to see how our fluency is developing and improving each week. The kids absolutely LOVE this competition that they have with themselves. These can of course, also be used for small guided math groups and math centres activities. For those of you who aren't as old as I am (!), I have included teacher instructions too.  Enjoy! Susan Powers www.pypteachingtools.com

It is filled with transdisciplinary, inquiry based, multi-sensory learning activities and experiments, fully differentiated for grades 3-6. It is a thoroughly engaging and rigorous unit. Back to School Drama Circle Making Friends.

(1)
This drama activity was designed for my 5th graders as a fun back to school activity and ice breaker as we get to know one another; seeing old friends again and establishing new friendships. It is also a great review of the speaking and listening strands and the Learner Profile and IB Attitudes. Thus also compatible with the CCSS ELA. There are numbered cards to help keep the younger kids on track and there are cards without numbers which I have used with my 5th graders to add rigour to the activity. The theme is around the new school year , what it takes to form friendships and has a lot of reflection as well as humour included. Lots of laughter with this IB PYP set. Drama circles! They bring out the risk taking, creativity in all kids and everyone has so much fun! These printable cards are just one of my drama circle activities that I use to practice the trans- disciplinary skills of cooperation, social and communication to name a few. One card begins the round and each child has to act out the instructions on their card, following on from the previous card. It is great for literacy centres activities as well as cooperative group work. Simply gather the children into a seated circle, shuffle the cards and distribute a card to each child. The start card leads the way and the children have to read their own instructions on their card and then listen and look for actions and words from the acting of each person so that they know when to take their turn. This is developing listening and observational skills as well as communication, presentation and thinking skills. Not every card requires speaking; some ask only for miming. The cards marked with a star are less wordy and better to use with struggling readers or ELL kids. I usually review the card with those kids prior to the circle. There are 32 cards within this packet and an instruction card. The drama cards can be used with 3rd-6th grade and used within a whole class scenario or smaller groups, where the children are given several cards to read and act from. The concept of drama circles is a great ice breaker or a fun review of the IB skills and attitudes. A Complete IB PYP Science Unit of Inquiry Earth's Structure and Landforms

(1)
Take the children to the centre of the Earth! Be the Miss Frizz of your classroom with this complete earth science, IB PYP unit of inquiry. How the World Works: Central idea: The Earth’s structure is constantly changing through processes and forces that can impact society. This unit is all about the amazing moving and shaking of our Earth’s surface, as we explore the science behind plate tectonics and how the processes under the Earth lead to the movement and changing of our world as we know it, how landforms are created and the cycle of the Earth’s life is at the hands of erosion and deposition. Go back 200 million years and explore Pangaea and make the connections between the world then and now. With over 140 pages of interactive, science foldables, flippables, hands on , engaging, inquiry based activities, this transdisciplinary unit will take you through math, critical thinking, writing, geography, reading for information and, of course, science. UK & USA spelling included. Lines of inquiry include: How is the Earth structured? How does the Earth’s crust move and separate? What causes different landforms? How do the changes in Earth’s surface impact humans? What tools do scientists use to detect and protect from potential natural disasters? A week long, collaborative summative assessment is an inquiry based project involving a mystery island that must be explored, researched and prepared for populating. The children are required to use their knowledge over the course of the unit, work as a team and present their findings, hypotheses and designs. Learning how to read clues from artefacts and also from evidence in the text, helped us to become incredible geologists as we had to figure out the answers to our lines of inquiry. This involved a lot of reading for information, analysing text and recognising non fiction text features. Through explorations within math, reading, writing, geography and history, the children gather knowledge of how plate tectonics contribute to how our world is shaped today. If you enjoy this complete unit of inquiry, you may also like my others: Ancient Civilizations, Rainforests and Food Chains, Adaptations of Living Things, Exploring Poetry, Exploring Explorers and many more found in my store and on my blog.
