This is a great hands-on activity for students (particularly boys) to practise their number identification to 100. Students ‘drive’ their toy car and park it in the correct space. Activity examples: ♦ Park your car on number ____. ♦ Park your car on a number that is one more than ____. ♦ Park your car on a number that is one less than ___. ♦ Park your car on a number that is bigger/smaller than ____. ♦ Park your car on an odd/even number. ♦ Park your car on a number that is between ____ and _____. ♦ Park your car on the answer to this question ______ . (eg 5+2) 33 different car park templates are provided. Types of car parks include: ♦ numbers 0-9 ♦ numbers 1-10 ♦ numbers 11-20 ♦ odd and even numbers 1-20 ♦ decade numbers (10-19, 20-29, 30-39, etc) ♦ -teen and -ty numbers (eg 17 and 70) ♦ tens (10, 20, 30, 40, etc) ♦ mixture of numbers between 1-50 ♦ mixture of numbers between 50-99 ♦ mixture of numbers between 1-99 ♦ double digits (eg 22, 33, 44, 55, etc) ♦ words (one – ten and eleven – twenty) ♦ count the dots (1-10) ♦ ten frames (1-10) ♦ tally marks (1-10) A car park for ‘hundreds’ is also included (100, 200, 300, 400 etc). * The font used is ‘NZ Basic Script’. * Car parks are provided in both grey and white (see images in PREVIEW). * Blank Templates are provided for you to make up your own number car parks. * You will need to provide your own toy cars, however there are some included that you can print, cut and laminate if necessary. * More than one car park can be lined up to provide an extra challenge for your students. ********************************************************************** © Suzanne Welch Teaching Resources

NZ Essential Spelling Words from Lists 1-8 An fun activity to practise spelling words. How it works: This activity can be done independently or in a group with others. Each person has one sheet of paper with words from the spelling list they are currently working on. Students take turns to roll the dice, read the word that matches the dice number, and write the word in the column underneath. There are 9 spaces under each word. Students can either: Roll - read - write Or Roll - read - cover - write A blank template is also included, enabling you to customise the spelling words for your students. The font used is ‘NZ Basic Script’. The letter shapes are the same as those recommended in the NZ Ministry of Education Handbook – ‘Teaching Handwriting’. This enables your students to work on their spelling and handwriting at the same time! An option would be to laminate the page(s) and make it a ‘write and wipe’ activity. The list number is written in the top right corner of each page. Made on A4 paper. This is an activity that reinforces the recognition of high frequency sight words. Display a selection of the flies (on a board, on the floor, hanging, etc). Say a word. Your student(s) must find the fly with that word written on it, and swat it with a fly swatter. So much fun! You will need to provide the fly swat. Included: ♦ 315 coloured flies ♦ 315 black/white flies ♦ Blank templates (coloured and black/white) 315 Words: ♦ 220 Dolch words in frequency order ♦ 95 Dolch nouns in alphabetical order A solid background colour is used on the 220 words (9 different colours). An engaging sight word activity …. particularly for your boys. Build a racing track and drive a toy car along it, reading the sight words as you go. This resource contains all 220 Dolch words. They are grouped in the following categories: ♦ Pre-primer ♦ Primer ♦ First Grade ♦ Second Grade ♦ Third Grade Provided in the following formats: ♦ Letter size paper ♦ A4 size paper The Dolch words are written on a piece of ‘racing track’. Print them off, laminate, and cut. Use as many pieces as you wish and combine them with the corners, starting grid and finishing line. Your students can design their very own racing track! You can use this resource to make up all sorts of games and activities. For example … * Make a racing track that is in the form of a loop. Roll a dice and travel that many spaces along the race track, reading the sight words as you go. Every time you pass the finishing line (chequered squares or flags) you score one point. Who can score 10 points first? * As above, but when you land on a word you count how many letters it has. You say the word out loud that many times. For example, if you land on the word ‘little’ you say it 6 times. * The teacher (or a buddy) says a word. Drive your car to that word. * The teacher (or a buddy) gives a clue to a word. Drive your car to that word. For example, drive your car to a word that starts with b and ends with k. Or, drive your car to a 3 letter word that rhymes with ‘man’. A different racing track layout can be built each time. Great for your creative learners! There are no countries that start with the letter X. Mexico has been used on this card as it contains the letter x. The font used is ‘NZ Basic Script’. New Zealand Essential Spelling Words (Lists 1-4). ‘Clip and Flip’ cards – look at the word frame and decide which word fits the frame. Place a peg on that word. Flip the card over and see if you are correct! You can use these cards as a literacy centre activity. Alternatively you can use them in the form of a ‘scavenger hunt’ or playing ‘hot potato’ - instructions included. Note: These cards do not have the answer indicated on the back. This is something you will need to do before laminating. The easiest way is just to place a sticker or a coloured pencil dot in the correct location (top, middle, bottom). The answer sheets are included so this should only be a 2 minute task. ‘Clip and Flip’ cards for Māori Numbers 1-20 A fun, hands-on activity for reinforcing the knowledge and recall of numbers 1-20. Instructions: Count how many ladybirds are on the front of the card. Read the words on the right. Match the Māori word with the number of ladybirds and place a clothes peg on that word. Flip the card over to see if you are correct. A set of ‘Park the car’ activity sheets for sight words from magenta to orange. A great hands-on literacy activity that will engage many of your students (particularly your boys). * Words are written with the NZ Basic Script font. * Car parks are provided in both colour and black/white. (see photos) * Two blank templates are provided for you to make up your own car park of words. * You will need to provide your own toy cars, however there are some included that you can print, cut and laminate if necessary. This activity can be played and adapted to however works best for you and your students. Two examples are: ♦ Students play in pairs and take alternate turns. Person A says “Park your car on the word did”. Person B ‘drives’ their toy car and parks on the word. Person A checks and confirms if it was correct parking or not. Students could receive a ’point’ for each one they get correct or you could simply make it non-competitive. ♦ Students play in pairs and take alternate turns. Person A drives their car into a space and says “I parked my car on the word did”. Person B checks and replies “True” or “False”. The person parking the car can try to trick the other player. • More than one car park can be lined up to make it more challenging. • You can send a ‘car park’ home with your students as an alternate way of reinforcing sight word learning at home. • For reluctant readers they may feel more encouraged to participate if they get to bring in a toy car from home to use. A super-fun activity for your students during Easter. Make the secret code wheel and use it to decipher some Easter jokes. Then use the secret code wheel to write your own secret messages. Included: ♦ Secret code wheel template ♦ Teacher notes ♦ 12 Easter jokes to decipher (answers included) ♦ Various Easter themed templates for your students to write secret messages on How it works: Turn the inner wheel so that the ‘code ear’ is pointing to the letter of the alphabet that you see in the mystery code writing. UK and USA spelling included (colour/color grey/gray) The Game: 4-in-a-row: ♦ Instructions and gameboards included. ♦ All you need is a dice and some counters. ♦ Suitable for 2 players. How to play: 1. Player A rolls the dice. 2. Player A reads the colour word that is located under the picture of the dice on the left side of the board. 3.
