6 page SEN handbook with basic information on SEN, teachers responsibilities to SEN learners and strategies to troubleshoot various issues e.g. off task behavior, organisation, time management, specific learning difficulties etc. There is also a section on exams and exam technique that can be given to students to support them with assessments.

Simple introduction / revision of the 4 main maths operations (times, divide, add and subtract). I have used this with KS3 and KS4 SEN pupils to check understanding or to revise.

Writing activity based on reading the blurb. One with questions to answer the other asking students to write what the blurb tells them and to explain why they think this.

Following of from writing about the description of The Captain at the opening of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island this activity gets students to write their own description of a pirate encouraging the use of adjectives, similes, metaphors, and speech, with speech marks. There is then a guided self and peer assessment activities followed by redrafting and final write up. I used this over a sequence of 3 lessons but mainstream learners would progress more quickly. A bundle of resources I used with as student with Autism who was finding creative wring challenging. Concrete experiences (receiving letters, doing a mock interview, photographs) and a clear structure helped him to construct a successful narrative with descriptions, and a clear structure.

Unit of work following the abridged version of Treasure Island edited by Pauline Francis in the ‘Fast Track Classics’ collection. I think this could be easily adapted/extended to follow the original text.
