Aims: This scheme of work in comprised of 12 lessons which intend to promote both a love of reading and a foundation of skills required to be a successful reader: 1. Setting a purpose for reading 2. Determining the meaning of words and phrases 3. Understanding the main idea 4. Skimming and scanning 5. Identifying the writer's purpose and point of view 6. Make links between ideas in a text 7. Critical reasoning 8. Inference and deduction 9. Visualisation 10. Summarising information 11. Cause and effect 12. Types of language Lessons all follow the same structure: • Learning objective/ outcome • Starter activity • Five minutes to change books etc • 20 minutes silent independent reading • Teacher questioning/review • Task linked to LO (20 mins) • Plenary Use of literacy centre managers: • General support and admin during the lesson • Withdrawal of identified students for 1:1 reading Each lesson has a student help sheet. Each student has their own resource booklet.

Used with year 8 literacy support class of disengaged boys to reengage with English over month period. Includes lots of discussion, reading skills and some writing tasks. Led to boys being reintegrated into class to start study on Macbeth's witches, hence last few lessons leaning towards comparison of witches in Spirited Away and Macbeth. Unit engaged boys through animation, anime and media activities. Includes 57 resources, including PowerPoints and unit of work which outlines what is involved in every lesson.
