WEBQUEST BERLIN

WEBQUEST BERLIN

Students will complete a general knowledge quiz prior to investigating Berlin. The idea behind the quiz is not to demonstrate a lack of student knowledge, but rather to show how varied the history of a particular monument, building or site can really be. The quiz in section 1 along with the questions in section 2 will help build a general overview of Berlin and aid them in their choice for their presentation. These sections will hopefully highlight curiosities rather than just the basic facts about the city, which may be helpful in the presentation phase. In the presentation phase students should be encouraged to present minimal written text on their slides. They are taking the role of a tour guide and should try to develop a presentation to reflect this. They should be reminded that the best tour guides weave a story rather than presenting just the basic facts. They should draw on sections 1 & 2 for ideas of the type of curiosities which might appeal to tourists. The strictness of the presentation guidelines can be decided by the individual teacher, taking into consideration the ability and knowledge of their students. Note though this is primarily designed for students who are older and have a good command of ‘English’ it can be modified for native speakers as well as those students who are learning about Germany and who are studying German. Student should be encouraged to cite sources and provide a bibliography.

100+ Fun Charades with Illustrations

100+ Fun Charades with Illustrations

Charades is a classic team or group game, easily suited for lots of different occasions and age levels and is absolutely enjoyed by many students! The object of the game is simple: players take turns acting out words, with no talking or sound effects. Other players try to guess the word, and the team or player who guesses the most wins. However, standard charades can be difficult for students. Due to time and team pressure, students sometimes are at a loss for ideas on how to act out the words. To counter this problem, I developed this product with: over 100 charades cards with phrases and sentences instead of words fun illustrations to go with each situation to help players associate words with something familiar Some students with lower (English) proficiency may benefit from this adaptation to the game so that they can join their classmates in the fun! Around the World Summer Camp- DAY 1 (Geography, KS2 KS3, EFL)

Around the World Summer Camp- DAY 1 (Geography, KS2 KS3, EFL)

This was originally taught to Korean Middle School EFL students for a fun art and craft/cooking camp however it is written entirely in English. The aim of this summer camp is for the students to have fun and to learn about different countries and cultures around the world. Each day will focus on a different country and we will learn some facts, look at famous places, food and do an art and craft activity associated with the country. At the start of each day students will guess the country. When I reveal the flag they must copy it onto their ‘passport’ sheet. If students behave well or win a task they receive a sticker on their passport. The student with the most stickers at the end of the camp will win a prize. Day 1: Introduce the summer camp and different monuments and buildings around the world. Today focuses on lots of games and team building activities so that everyone gets to know each other.  Activity 1: Icebreaker Students are given a ‘passport worksheet where they write their name, age, favorite food, favorite place in Korea and three places they would like to visit in the future. They should complete this quite quickly 5-10 minutes. When everyone has finished I pass the ball and when they catch it the student must say something about themselves and introduce themselves to the rest of the class.  Team game (1): Guess where it is from Students look at the famous buildings/monuments from around the world. In teams they must guess which country they think it is from. The team with the most correct will win travel stickers in their passport.  Team game (2): Build a tower In teams students have 30minutes to build a monument/tower using only dried spaghetti, peppero sticks and marshmallows. They have to work together as a team and at the end they can win points based on how tall, how wide and how unique their building is. The winning team gains stickers for their passport.  Lunch Students are given cooked sausage, cucumbers, crackers and cube cheese. Individually on their plate they have to cut slices and try to build the tallest tower. The person with the tallest ‘tower’ wins a sticker for their passport. They can then eat these and the snacks from earlier for lunch.  Team game (3): Jenga race In teams students take it in turns to race forwards and take a block out of the jenga tower. They must then run back to their team and try to build another structure. The team with the tallest structure at the end (whose original building hasn’t fallen over!) are the winners and gain stickers for their passports.  Art and Crafts Using clay, students must make a small keyring or magnet in the shape of a famous building or monument from the lesson. Seoul Tower, Eiffel Tower, Pyramid, Big Ben etc.

ESL with Emotional Intelligence

ESL with Emotional Intelligence

The author has kindly given us permission to release this version of her book fro FREE during Ramadan. She has been a teacher, trainer and an academic coordinator in the English Language department for a prestigious University. Her latest training program has been accreditted by Ofqal as a level 5 Diploma. This latest work is a unique way to support people acquiring the English language. The key to successful English language is reading and writing. One of the struggles with ESL students is an intrinsic awareness of not wanting to look foolish when speaking another language. Writing journals are a great way to get a student engaged in the art of writing. What strengthens this process is when the writing is relatable and supports the development of the individual. The journals cater for ESL students with prompts related to the four intelligences, making it easy for them to write and minimising the effective filter. The journals are an excellent source for differentiated teaching and self-learning, as the subject matter is the most popular one amongst nearly all students…. Themselves. Suad Mohamed

Paired Texts - Australasia - Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions

Paired Texts - Australasia - Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions

This guided reading resource includes a pair of texts about Australasia with four comprehension skills sheets to complete, providing reading passages and questions that are challenging and engaging. Using the ‘LIMS’ approach, students work through Literal, Inference, Meaning and Summary questions to ensure that in the course of a week, they have practised skills in reading right across the Common Core. Text is differentiated and an answer scheme is provided. Suggested itinerary: Day 1 (30 mins) – Read both texts as a class. Highlight key parts. Discuss together. What have we learned? What do we want know more about? It is worth asking the students to write down any questions they have about the texts and putting them on display. Day 2 (30 mins) – Literal sheet Day 3 (30 mins) – Inference sheet (or meaning sheet if you prefer) Day 4 (30 mins) – Meaning sheet (or inference sheet if you prefer) Day 5 (45 mins) – Summary sheet and looking back at questions from the start of the week. This is the second in a series of Paired text resources looking at the seven continents of the world. Keep an eye on my store. Differentiation: All questions are the same, which should make marking easier! However, the texts differ, with asterisks in the bottom right corner indicating the reading level.
