SAND ISLANDS OF THE MEKONG RIVER CAMBODIA

SAND ISLANDS OF THE MEKONG RIVER CAMBODIA

This is a study about sand - great quantities of sand supplied by the Mekong River and deposited within its wide reaches. It is about sand transportation, arrival, deposition and removal. The sand, with its high nutrient composition is regarded by Cambodian farmers as "the gift of the Mekong". Beyond the geomorphology of this sand is the way it affects the way of life of the Cambodians of the sand islands. The annual gift is usually manageable but in 2011 the Mekong flood levels were extremely high. Many from the sand islands were evacuated to higher/safer grounds. Even so, 2011 was considered to be a "disastrous year for many from the sand islands. Loss of life and considerable destruction of low-lying areas made this a year when the gifts of the river became overwhelming -particularly on sand islands that were severely flooded. To make this easier to understand you might consider linking this unit with one entitled "The Case of Chey Phy's disappearing island". Use the photographs to gain ideas about the way of life on the sand islands. "Step onto the islands" but have a care when near the sandy banks of the Mekong River because they are prone to collapse.

MEKONG RIVER STUDY PART 1 - LIFE ON AND AROUND THE CAI BE PORT IN VIETNAM

MEKONG RIVER STUDY PART 1 - LIFE ON AND AROUND THE CAI BE PORT IN VIETNAM

This unit has a focus on life around the port of Cai Be - Vietnam. This settlement depends on the water within the Mekong system. The water level varies during the year - being at its height when the Mekong has greater flow levels. The residents around the water's edge and those living in boats on the water adapt to the water conditions. Sample studies of a small scale family business are included because they represent the dozens of enterprises within the settlement. But Cai Be is also a tourist attraction. It is a destination for tourist companies bringing visitors from Ho Chi Minh City. Others reach the destination by taking side excursions off Mekong River Cruises. Take your students on a boat ride through the port. Find out how one small company uses the resources from the Mekong floodplain. Venture into the side channel and see the larger processing factories. The attachments provide an opportunity to distribute hard copies. This is part 1 of a series of studies on the Mekong River - a major river of South East Asia

THE TONLE SAP LAKE AND RIVER OF CAMBODIA -AN INLAND WATER STUDY

THE TONLE SAP LAKE AND RIVER OF CAMBODIA -AN INLAND WATER STUDY

Potentially this unit has multiple uses across age ranges from primary to secondary levels in geography and environmental studies. The lake and connecting river have rather unique hydrology in significant variations in water level and reverses flows of the Tonle Sap River linking the lake with the Mekong River. One suggested approach is to use this as an information gathering tutorial so that students can fill-in the worksheet (at the end of the unit) as the pages are screened. This unit supports the Australian geography curriculum at senior levels - Unit 1 - Natural and ecological hazards (flooding); Unit 2 - Sustainable places - Year 6 - Asia - geographical diversity; Year 10 Asia - Inland water study. The very large Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in SE Asia and supports about 2 million people around its perimeter. It also has historical significance because the presence of this lake and the in-flowing Siem Reap River had relevance for the locating of the large sandstone cities within the Angkor region during the development of the Khmer Empire. Join the trip along the Tonle Sap River. Cross the Tonle Sap Lake and gain some understanding of the importance of this inland water system for the people of Cambodia. The attached worksheets in general and pdf form are essential additions if you choose to treat this resource material as a tutorial.
