This might (!) be my favourite ever lesson!! Students work through background knowledge before taking on the role of a Politburo member investigating a mysterious 1934 murder (Kirov). Students work there was through the (superbly detailed!) 21 pieces of evidence to help them crack the case. Works brilliantly with a dead body on the floor and some crime scene tape/sirens! I hope your students enjoy this activity as much as mine always do!

Students are asked to arrange the evidence firstly into industrial and agricultural, and then into successes and failures. KS3 History The Cold War, Superpowers, The Vietnam War Fully resources lesson investigating American tactics and their response to the Vietcong, discussing why they may be controversail Students watch a section of the Search & Destroy mission in Apocalypse Now and look at the who the aims of the US army, creating a success criteria for any US tactic. Students are given a pack of 15 large information cards offering information as to how and why President Kennedy was assassinated and are encouraged to write their findings on the mystery sheets provided at the end of the pack. Stalin's Russia Top Trumps Game - 61 cards

Teeming with precise and carefully selected evidence my students love playing this game to boost subject knowledge. There are sixty one cards (which work best when cut out and laminated) and they are colour coordinated into categories: rise to power, purges, WWII, industry/agriculture, and culture. These cards include all the main figures you would expect such as young Stalin, Trotsky, Beria and so on but also some lesser known figures such as Maria Yudina (Stalin’s favourite musician), Vasily Blokhin (notorious WWII executor), and Mikhail Gelovani (actor who played Stalin 13 times in various Soviet movies). On each card there is a key date/event for that person, two precise statistics, and a quotation. Students simply call out a category and the person with the highest card ‘trumps’ the other, winning their card. The objective is to strip your opponent of their cards to win the game. This is a resource I am very proud of and which has received many accolades from students and lesson observations alike and which will really boost your students’ subject knowledge of Stalin’s Russia. This activity works really well as a stand-alone activity, revision tool, or starter/plenary to any lesson on Stalin’s Russia. I hope you enjoy it as much as my students do!

Cuban Missile Crisis - activity

Students work their way through the background knowledge before taking a what-would-you-do style quiz. Each question focuses on a different stage in the crisis and students are given three options to choose from. Afterwards students add up their tally and are grouped into brackets to show what kind of President they would have made. Weimar & Nazi Germany Top Trumps Game - 132 cards

Teeming with precise and carefully selected evidence my students love playing this game to boost subject knowledge. There are one hundred & thirty two cards (which work best when cut out and laminated) including figures such as the only Jewish representative of the German Olympic squad Helene (Meyer) and Hitler’s British wartime dog (Little Fox), as well as more obvious characters such as Vienna-period Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler etc. On each card there is a key date/event for that person, two precise statistics, and a quotation. Students simply call out a category and the person with the highest card beats the other, winning their card. The objective is to strip your opponent of their cards to win the game. End of Term History Lesson

End of Term History Lesson

A fun and creative history project lesson for students in the last week of term. Could be used for activities week in Humanities or just as a reward lesson the last time you see your class for the summer. Very easy to set up - you will just need a few balloons, string, sellotape, felt tips and a bag of old clothes. The students work in small groups to research and recreate a famous historical figure (info sheets and clip tasks included - all instructions on Powerpoint). The lesson can last as long as you want it to, and I gave prizes of sweets at the end for the best one - but that’s optional! My students really enjoyed it and we took pictures at the end for the school website. Hopefully yours will love it too. I’m going to be adding lots more free History lessons over the coming months.
