Teacher Pack: Coastal Engineering and management

Teacher Pack: Coastal Engineering and management

In this pack you will find a range of ideas, activities, resources and lesson plans, designed to allow you to engage students on the topic of Coastal Management & Engineering, facilitate learning and maximise understanding of natural coastal processes and management strategies for the local beaches, foreshores and dunes on the Gold Coast. Resources are created for targeted year groups and include clear curriculum links. Coastlines are dynamic environments, constantly changing as a result of coastal processes and varying weather patterns. Under calm conditions, the sand may shift just a millimetre or so and during an extreme storm event, beaches can change rapidly as sand is moved offshore. Historically, storm events have driven innovation in coastal engineering in order to protect our city. However, as population has grown on the Gold Coast, so too has development along our beaches. A range of coastal management techniques are being implemented across the Gold Coast to meet the varying challenges faced by each area, depending on environmental conditions and the extent of development. The resources in this pack allow you and your students to explore Coastal Management & Engineering on the Gold Coast, through engaging and thought provoking activities. You can order your spiral bound hard copy or free PDF version here: https://www.griffith.edu.au/engineering-information-technology/griffith-centre-coastal-management/community-projects/coasted/programs/resources/teacher-pack-coastal-management-and-engineering

113 High Quality Pictures About Water - Perfect For Any Water Related Topic.

113 High Quality Pictures About Water - Perfect For Any Water Related Topic.

Looking for pictures about rivers, water or the sea? Here is a set of three PowerPoints, which focus on water bodies, rivers and coastal images. In total, there are 113 different photos. These could be used to make a very impressive eye catching display. The photos could be mixed and sorted in different ways. The photos would also make excellent settings for stories which are linked to the water topic. For older students, they could also look and discuss the human and physical geography in the the different pictures. Students could sort these into the different parts of the water cycle. Students can use the different images in topics about rivers, seas or oceans. They could even be used to inspire students during a water - related art lesson.

Reflections

Reflections

A small collection of photos that can be used as part of a lesson on the science of reflections, or on weather, clouds, lakes and rivers. Why is it possible for me to see the clouds in the water? What do you think the weather might be like today, what things should I wear or take with me on my walk? Would I have the same image if the water was running faster? The river Kent caused serious flooding after Storm Desmond when it burst its banks, and many people were homeless or lost businesses for more than 6 months. If you were responsible for the people in the town of Kendal, what might you do to prevent flooding of this river in the future? Please leave me a review and I will send you any other resource of your choice for free (contact me: office@oceansproject.com). Check out my other resources at my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/sarah277 Let me know if you have any resource requests and I will tailor make a resource for you.

Settlements: Towns

Settlements: Towns

A small collection of photos of Kendal, Cumbria in the Lake District, England. Can be used as part of a lesson on settlements, towns, tourism, weather, jobs, and issues affecting urban and rural areas. As well as locational knowledge about Britain. The town of Kendal was badly affected by the flooding after Storm Desmond and is only now recovering. The floods had a huge impact on the people of the community as well as business and people having to leave their homes. How might students plan for future flood prevention and evacuation? Please leave me a review and I will send you any other resource of your choice for free (contact me: office@oceansproject.com).
