Health and disease

A fun, engaging and detailed lesson presentation (36 slides) and accompanying worksheet that ensures that students understanding the meaning of health before looking at communicable and non-communicable diseases. The lesson begins by challenging the students to use an example health survey to complete a definition for health, so that recognise that these means people are free of disease and are healthy both physically and mentally. Moving forwards, students will meet the terms communicable and non-communicable and learn that the key difference between these diseases is whether they can be spread. A quick competition is used to test whether the students can allocate a disease as communicable or non. Time is taken to look at the details of some of these diseases and students will learn that sometimes diseases have aspects of both communicable and non-communicable such as cervical cancer caused by HPV. There are progress checks throughout the lesson so that students can assess their understanding. There is a homework set as part of the learning. This lesson has been designed for GCSE students but is suitable for use with KS3 students who are looking at the health topic.

Blood clotting

A concise and interesting lesson presentation (19 slides) and accompanying differentiated worksheets that explore the steps involved in the complex process of clotting the blood. The lesson begins by challenging the students to recognise a picture of Queen Victoria before they learn how she is associated with the disease, haemophilia. Moving forwards, students are challenged to recall that platelets are the part of blood involved in blood clotting. A quick competition is used to maintain engagement and to introduce them to fibrinogen. Students will learn how fibrinogen is converted into fibrin and how the network of fibres produced by this protein traps red blood cells. An incomplete flow diagram is used as the progress check where students have to bring together all of the information they have been given to complete the steps involved in clotting. This lesson has been designed for GCSE students but could be used as a starting point for A-level Biology students. Alternatively, if you are looking for a lesson for A-level, my resource "Blood clotting A-level" may be more suitable
