Algebra Tiles

Algebra Tiles

I’ve used this when introducing factorising quadratics and have found it very useful for pupils as they are able to visual the process. On the back side is the -x^2 and -x and -1 . Any feedback is welcome!

Working With Algebra

Working With Algebra

Having been asked to help some students (Years 9 and 10) who lacked confidence in class I decided to write these four sheets that we will go through together; the questions are designed to get increasingly difficult and to encourage questions and discussion. There are also various answers for some of the questions, another chance for a mathematical discussion. Topics covered include simplifying expressions, indices, expanding brackets (and therefore factorising) and basic algebraic fractions. The questions are varied in the hope of not allowing students to get into a rut and answer without thinking carefully. I have also introduced the word and symbol “identity”. I hope it is useful.

Linear Simultaneous Equations Word Problems (IGCSE/GCSE)

Linear Simultaneous Equations Word Problems (IGCSE/GCSE)

This presentation is a step-by-step guide that would help students with word problems on linear simultaneous equations.I have included five different types of word problems that GCSE/IGCSE students are likely to come across. By the end of this lesson students will be able to construct simultaneous equations by deriving information from the word problem. Students should be able to solve simultaneous equations using both the substitution and elimination methods prior to this lesson. The word problems used in this presentation are from the Extended Mathematics for Cambridge IGCSE book by David Rayner. Do drop a comment below to let me know what you think of this resource. Your ratings will also be highly valued.

Expand Brackets - Battleships

Expand Brackets - Battleships

A simple resource based on battleships around expanding a single bracket by a coefficient. This was created as part of a no pen series of lessons to promote good oracy in lessons. There are two versions, rock hard and ice cool with the left hand side of the table giving you the multiplier for the bracket. I have left it as a word document so it can easily be adapted.

Expanding Double Brackets puzzle - links to factorising quadratics

Expanding Double Brackets puzzle - links to factorising quadratics

I used this when teaching Year 7 how to expand double brackets. They had to put expressions into the grids, so that each row and column multiplies to give the quadratic expression at the end. This helped them discover how to factorise quadratics! Answers are provided. Inspired by a similar, but more difficult, task from Don Steward: https://donsteward.blogspot.com/2014/12/algebraic-product-puzzles.html

Expanding Two Brackets (Loop Cards)

Expanding Two Brackets (Loop Cards)

I love to start one-to-one tutorials/interventions with a loop card activity. They are also excellent when working with small groups or as a starter or plenary for a whole class. To see all the available loop-card topics click 👉 tes.com/…/More Loop Cards….<hr>This particular set of cards allows students to practise finding the product of two binomial expressions which are both in the form (x ± ?). Note that the questions have been carefully selected so that they provide good coverage of this sub-topic and so that the opportunities for students to guess answers are minimised.<hr>Colour coding: All my loop cards are colour-coded to indicate the approximate level of the questions: KS2 – red and orange KS3/GCSE Foundation – orange and green GCSE Higher – green, blue and purple<hr>Further information: In this download there are four sets of similar cards and a student chooses one of the sets and sorts them into order by answering the questions. Then they try to do it faster using a different set, which has the same questions, but a different sort order 😃 My favourite use of loop cards is for two students to have different versions of the cards and race each other. They then check their answers, shuffle, swap packs and race again (quickest overall time wins). More instructions are included in the download. Cut out card size is approx. 65 x 90 mm.<hr>👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬. Maths-Algebra-Code breaking - Team work- Activity- KS3 or KS4 - Changing the subject-Coefficients

Maths-Algebra-Code breaking - Team work- Activity- KS3 or KS4 - Changing the subject-Coefficients

A brilliant resource that incorporates: Algebra, rearranging equations, changing the subject in equations, applying algebra to a problem, team work. I made this resource and got offered a job when I did a job interview. They said it was the best planned and most engaging lesson they had ever seen. Keep it up your sleeve for an observation from your Head of Department or even better OFSTED. Mission cards should be printed backed and laminated and the resource can be re-used over and over. The task involves simple algebra, changing the subject, positive and negative numbers.
