#### Linking nth term rule to linear graphs

This lesson starts with a recap of the nth term rule and then links this to linear graphs. It is quite an abstract connection and would work better with higher ability groups but can work equally well with lower ability groups if provided with extra scaffolding.

#### Sequences puzzle

Pupils are given two fractions as the start of a sequence, and try to extend it. Could be made easier or introduced using integers rather than fractions, maybe with some decimals and negatives in between. Works as either a ‘low floor high ceiling’ task, or as a way of revising different sequence types and also decimals, negatives and fractions. Particularly for the quadratic sequence, there’s scope to spend time looking at the algebra needed to find solutions. Please let me know if you can think of any other ways to extend the task!

#### Substituting into nth term to create a sequence

Worksheet that starts with producing a linear sequence from an nth term. Using the minimally different approach students are asked to spot what is similar about certain sequences and how this is shown in the nth term itself. The second page is generating fractional sequences. Third page looks at quadratic sequences being produced. On both the second and third pages students can be asked what is the same and what is different when compared to the linear sequences on page one.

#### Term-to-term rule investigation - finding a general rule

A short investigation where students use a term-to-term rule to create a linear sequence. They are asked to find the 11th and 101st terms, and so encouraged to think of a more generalised rule.

#### Identifying Sequences - Square number, triangle number, Fibonacci

A simple booklet designed for my bottom set year 8 class to get them looking at these key sequences, trying to develop their ability to spot patterns and make predictions.

#### 2017 Year 6 Maths SATs revision - Week 3 of a 4 week revision programme

Topics covered are: Arithmetic (Paper 1) - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of 2 digit - 6 digit numbers, decimals, fractions and BODMAS Maths reasoning (Paper 2 and Paper 3) - problem solving involving algebra; problem solving involving all four operations, geometry - shape and angles, SATs safari based around algebra questions. #### Y6 algebra - solving linear sequences

Written for year 6 algebra in the new National Curriculum (but also suitable at KS3), a differentiated question sheet, with a set of linear sequences for children to solve. In each case, they need to find the rule for n, then the 10th, 20th, 50th or other specified term. Example: Q: What is the 20th number in this sequence? 5, 8, 11 A: Rule: 3n+2 20th number is (3x20) + 2 = 62 Differentiated with 6 easier questions, 14 core (increasing in difficulty), then 4 extension questions going into negative number sequences for the more able. Answer sheet provided in same format. Whole document is in Word, so can be edited (tweaked slightly to make it easier or harder, depending on your class) or copy / pasted into Smartboard or other formats. Would also be suitable for a homework / reinforcement.
