This engaging pack is an Integrated Case Study with 50 pages of student activities comparing a traditional indigenous lifestyle with the student’s own lifestyle. It reviews aspects of self and society that were studied in the early years of learning. The children explore the impact of environment and experience on human behaviour. The activities contrasts the child’s own lifestyle with that of the modern indigenous family in a remote area of Australia. The information comes from first hand experience by the author, and includes a variety of images and drawings done within the remote community. Topics of work, play, living, environment, medicine, language are all covered in this comprehensive introduction to the indigenous way. I also use a scrapbook of the photos I have from my time in this community. Matariki – Cinquain Poetry

Celebrate the Māori New Year with this fun poetry writing activity. Lift the flap to see the poem underneath the decorative star. 1. Write (draft) the poem on the student template. This is located on the same sheet as the star (to reduce photocopying!). 2. Colour the star. 3. Publish the poem on the big circle template. 4. Cut both circles out. 5. Staple the circles together at the top. These look wonderful displayed on the classroom wall. There are 5 different star templates, allowing plenty of choice and variety. The Cinquain Poem looks at nouns, verbs, adjectives and synonyms so it is the perfect writing activity to compliment your word work programme. There are two different frameworks included in this resource (see below). Each template has the heading ‘Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou’ (Happy New Year) and a decorative panel at the base. Students add their own creative touch to the middle section. Matariki Art – 4 Star Collaborative Quilts

A fun art activity for your students when celebrating the Māori New Year. Colour, cut and join together. There are 6 different star quilts. One of the images above shows all 6 designs. Four students work together to create an art piece. Each student has one of the four different templates for one of the designs. For example, templates A1, A2, A3 and A4 are used to create Design A. The templates are all clearly labelled. Students can choose who they work with, or you can hand the templates out randomly and they find the 3 other people who have the sheets that they need to complete the square. Matariki – Māori Kites - ing Poetry

A simple poetry writing activity to use when learning about and celebrating the Māori New Year. The topic of this poetry is Manu Tukutuku (kites). The framework of the poem is very simple and is particularly suitable for junior students. The Publishing Template: Your students write their poem in the square that has the lines and they colour the picture of the kite in the adjacent square. The template is then cut out and displayed like a quilt. I typically have a discussion with the students to talk about what rules they would like. The students then write them onto to the templates to make a colourful display on the wall. I have include 4 different versions for you to chose from to so that you have one that best fits your students and class. - Already coloured in traditional Maori colours. - Needs to be coloured in with koru's already on Wharenui - Basic shape of Wharenui (Koru's need to be added) - Blank template with no lines.Students do it all This resource is perfect for a Waitangi Day activity, Maori Language Week, or for your day to day Te Reo teaching in a Bi-Lingual, Full Immersion or normal primary class.
