Around the World in 32 Sentences - Descriptive Writing Challenge!

‘Around the World in 32 Sentences’ is a fun and interesting way to enable students to build their descriptive writing skills, whilst also developing their understanding of the world around them. Transporting students on a journey to a multitude of different settings around the world, the resources break down extended writing by providing comprehensive, informative subject matter material and differentiated challenge outcomes. This aids them in constructing a larger, more substantial piece of writing over the course of the task, based on their travels around the world! In each of the world destinations, students are provided with ‘Bronze’, ‘Silver’, and ‘Gold’ challenges, to stretch learners of all abilities. Furthermore, children who require additional support can access the task using the handy writing template and descriptive writing help-sheets, both of which are provided within the resource pack. Assessment for Learning is utilised throughout, with success criterion provided for students to peer assess both before and after the main task. Included in this pack is: Colourful and engaging PowerPoint, providing fantastic stimuli for writing; Supportive step-by-step writing template; Writing to Describe help-sheet; Success Criteria - Peer/Self-Assessment information. All resources are provided in both Word and PDF, in order to ensure consistency of formatting between computers, and also opportunities to edit the resources should you wish! I have used these resources with a number of different age groups (as have many of my other teacher colleagues), however they are best suited to KS2 and lower KS3 students.

Easter Go Fish Card Game (have/have got)

Easter Go Fish Card Game (have/have got)

A card game to practice Easter vocabulary and have/have got in their various forms. To play: Divide students into groups of 4 or so and deal 4-5 cards each. The rest go in the middle and make the pond /pool/. On his turn, a player asks someone for a card (Have you got…? or Do you have…?) in order to get 4 of a kind (or 6, depending on how many cards you make). If the player has the card, he must hand it over and the player whose turn it is can ask anyone for another card. If the answer is negative, the player is told to go fish and to take a card from the pond and the next person asks for a card. When a player has 4 (or 6) of a kind, he sets them on the table and plays again. Continue until all the cards run out (all the cards have been grouped together into families according to their picture). The winner is the person with the most families. This worksheet contains two of each picture, so I would suggest printing it two or three times to form a set where students can get 4 or 6 of a kind. Enjoy!

EAL New Arrivals: Scheme of Work and Resource Pack

EAL New Arrivals: Scheme of Work and Resource Pack

This book will serve as a short course for new EAL (English as an Additional Language) students who may have recently arrived in Primary or Secondary school and who may have limited or no English. Currently in Education, many schools have significant numbers of students arriving each year with limited English skills and therefore little no access to the school curriculum. Formal EAL departments and training in schools has slowly diminished in recent years and often there is no clear course or structure in how to ingratiate these students into the school and offer appropriate support. Teachers are often at a loss when it comes to providing work for these students and the students themselves can be very limited in their ability to progress. Very often there is a lack of specialist EAL teachers or support workers in schools and so this book would offer an easy to teach method for different members of staff in a school. This book could be used over a 6-7 week course, therefore could be ideal introduction for the EAL student’s first half term in a school. It will include weekly themes that mix the acquiring of English language grammar and vocabulary, improving reading, writing and oral skills and learning common and useful element of English to improve their daily life in school and in the community.
