Back to school - addition and subtraction reasoning

Back to school - addition and subtraction reasoning

Wake up your pupils’ brains with these addition and subtraction challenge cards! These calculations challenge your pupils’ understanding, ability to reason mathematically and algebraic thinking in a fun and engaging way. Using images to represent numbers, children use what they know to discover the value of the images. They need to understand the meaning of =, + and - signs and the relationship between addition and subtraction. The calculations include doubles and number bonds to 10 and 20. There are 4 sets of progressively more difficult calculations, as well as 4 sets with the numbers given in an answer key for children requiring more support. There are two open-ended calculations where children can find multiple possible answers to extend their thinking. Further extensions include children writing their own challenges or describing how they solved the problem. Happy teaching!

Pythagorean Tree Lesson, accessible from Y6 to Y13 !!

Pythagorean Tree Lesson, accessible from Y6 to Y13 !!

This lesson introduces the patterns and maths behind the amazing Pythagorean Tree. Print off the worksheet and dotted paper (make sure the printer option has no scaling then the dots remain as 5mm) Start the lesson by showing the ppt. At a basic level the lesson is to follow the procedure and draw the tree. The higher level is to fill in the worksheet and spot the patterns and make predictions. The optional top level is to find the formulas. Either way, the lesson provides a great introduction to fractuals and produces some accessible and interesting sequences.

Class Cluedo Maths

Class Cluedo Maths

This converts the classic game Cluedo into three maths lessons. The aim for the children is to find out the location, weapon and the murderer by solving clues the murderer has left. I’ve always taught it as the children are in teams of 3 but it could be bigger or smaller teams. The font on the powerpoint is Baskerville Old Face which isn’t supported on the TES preview. The powerpoint is designed for a Year 6 class. However, it can be adapted to any age range, including secondary school, as everything within it is editable. The clues are meant to be multiple step maths questions and have been left blank for your use. It includes: The Cluedo Powerpoint The clues template on word The clues extention template on word A set of Cluedo cards on publisher A nice touch may be to get some deerstalker hats so the children can answer as the detective.
