'How Does Ernie Feel?'- Comprehension & writing

**English literacy lesson on comprehension, understanding and interpreting the characters emotions, and communicating through writing. ** Using a chapter from the book explore how Ernie felt when his family chooses not to believe in his dreams and his family ridicules him. The worksheet looks at questions such as; How you think Ernie may have felt when his brothers laughed at him? How do you think Ernie felt to know his family were not supporting him? What do you think Ernie hoped would happen when he told his family? Was his family disbelief in his dreams another factor in him leaving home? And encourages writing activities on these questions. Can be used in preparation for the lesson ‘Ernie’s Letter Home’ in which pupils write a letter home to persuade family to believe in his dream and come with him. See other resource for this lesson. Teach kids this great life lesson, whilst developing sentence structure, self reflection and use of words to express emotion, through 3 main questions: 1- have you ever been determined to achieve a goal? 2- what strategies did you use to achieve it? 3- what did it feel like when you achieved it? Invite children to discuss these questions and to share their strategies and experiences with the group. Worksheet on being determined. For key stage 2. Bucket Filler 20 minute class assembly about kindness and caring based on the book by Carol McCloud

Bucket Filler 20 minute class assembly about kindness and caring based on the book by Carol McCloud

Did you know that everyone carries an invisible bucket that can be filled by doing kind things? This 20 minute assembly is based on the book ‘have you filled a bucket today?’ by Carol McCloud (an amazing book that I would recommend to any teacher). There are enough short speaking parts for a class of 30+ and the script is fully editable. Your children will introduce the concept of bucket filling and dipping to their audience. Through short drama pieces, they will demonstrate the benefits of bucket filling and the negative impact of bucket dipping. So, ask yourself, have you filled a bucket today?

Going on a Journey to your Dreams - Creative writing & vocabulary activity.

Going on a Journey to your Dreams - Creative writing & vocabulary activity.

What does it take to go on a journey to reach a goal/dream? A good positive and resilient attitude is needed to succeed. Use this resource and activity, to teach children a range of new vocabulary on the theme of being determined, and then let them decide which new words they would need for their journey to their own dreams. Next explore how they can encourage themselves when it gets tough by making a title for themselves just like Ernie's awesome title; The Determined Dreamer, and decide what they will say to themselves when they feel like giving up. A complete lesson based on the book 'Ernie Gonzales: The Determined Dreamer'. Can be used with or without the novel. Optional extra activity is a creative writing exercise to consolidate the theme and the new vocabulary learnt, see other resources. Suggested uses: for PHSE topics such as going for goals within a literacy and creative writing context, useful as a whole class activity or in a small group with a greater focus on personal development, goal setting and self belief. Or can be used with the main focus being on the introduction of new words and incorporating them into a creative writing exercise. Also, if used with the book, suggested chapters can be read for further exploration of the topic, interpreting authors meaning and use of language and comprehension.
