French – Years 8 or 9 Magazine Project - ideal for the end of term.

French – Years 8 or 9 Magazine Project - ideal for the end of term.

This is a fun, creative project for students of all ability ranges. It is a great project for pupils in years 8 or 9 and takes 2 – 3 weeks to complete. Pupils work in pairs or small groups to make their own French magazine. The PowerPoint goes through the different types of magazines pupils could create (fashion, sport, tech, healthy lifestyle, music, travel) and explains in a step-by-step format the different features each magazine should include. Example and ideas of features/ articles to include are also given. The PowerPoint is a complete introduction to pupils for the creative work they will be doing, in the form of a magazine, and there is also a worksheet to print for each group to keep to guide them through everything they should include. It is ideal to do at the end of term as it allows pupils to work independently from the teacher; practise the French they have learnt; and they really enjoy this creative task.

Un groupe de musiciens. Year 7. Developing reading and translation skills.

Un groupe de musiciens. Year 7. Developing reading and translation skills.

I have designed this to support my year 7 in developing reading/ writing / translating skills. I started with the text ( pair work competition : each pupil has a different colour pen, the first to circle the translation in French in the text wins the point and it is quite visual at the end who is fastest . Great fro competition The other activities involve finding translations, matching up for lower ability and extending sentences from the given text. The last slide on the Power Point contains a writing list of bullet points ( goes with Studio 1 ’ il est hypercool’ but can be adapted for other courses. I owe Rachel Hawkes a big thank you for inspiring the Power Point slides offering differentiation when sentence building on mini whiteboards. I hope it is useful.

French Taboo game - Le Petit Prince

French Taboo game - Le Petit Prince

Playing games and having fun is when learning really happens in French class. I love to play the game Taboo with my students. French Taboo is a game that is easy to modify and use with beginners and advanced students alike. This Taboo set is about the wonderful and delightful classic story of the Petit Prince written by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. This Taboo set Special le Petit Prince edition includes 167 Vocabulary words translated as well as files in French only. Great for Immersion schools! Object of the game One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can’t use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are written beneath the underlined word at the top of the card. Teams score points for each word successfully guessed. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. The teams take turn guessing and verifying no Taboo words have been used. You can also play this game in pairs if everyone agrees not to cheat. Beginner students should be allowed to use the French TABOO words printed on the cards. This will encourage them to use new vocabulary and will help them in forming sentences to use as clues. You can also have your students study the vocabulary on the cards! This will have them beginning to think about the writing theme for the week and is their first pre-writing assignment. Kids love drawing, and the pictures they draw will later serve as inspiration! ✍Mardi: Mon livret de vocabulaire - Each student receives a booklet to help them explore the vocabulary related to the week’s writing theme. The front page includes the writing prompt of the week and an image. The second page includes over 80 frequently used French words. Page three lists 12 words that go along with the theme of the week, and the back page has space for ten words that students have either thought of on their own or looked up in the dictionary. The booklet is a simple one page printable that you can either fold in advance or have students do it on their own. Kids write their name on the front cover and you could have them color it. ✍Mercredi: Vocabulaire - Students go back to their vocabulary booklets from Tuesday and choose ten words that they will include in their rough draft. The words they choose can be a combination of words they have chosen and themed vocabulary that was already written in the booklet. They then write down the chosen words on their vocabulary page that says “ Mots de vocabulaire utiles: J’utiliserai ces mots dans mon paragraphe.” ✍Jeudi: Mon brouillon - Students write a rough draft of their paragraph using the vocabulary words selected on Wednesday. The brouillon page includes a 5 point checklist at the top for students to evaluate their work for themselves before writing the final copy on Friday. This will motivate students to look over their work and make corrections. ✍Vendredi: Ma copie propre - The fifth and final step in this writing program is to write the final copy. Students should feel very confident in writing about this week’s theme by now. At the top of the final copy page they’ll see the writing prompt and question words that they can ask themselves while writing: qui - quoi - quand - où - pourquoi - comment ** Ways you can use this writing program:** ✎ Enhance your writing program by practicing a little every day. ✎ Use the prompts at writing centers Monday - Friday. ✎ Daily 5 rotations ✎ Homework ✎ Writing centers ✎ Fast finishers ✎ Tutoring sessions ✎ No prep sub materials ✎ Morning work ✎ Project on whiteboard for a whole class speaking activity
