This unit of work has been designed to encourage readers to further enjoy this story by engaging with and extending their comprehension of the book; Ratburger. There is an illustrated booklet which follows each chapter in chronological order and invites the reader to; read the book in close detail, explore the characters, consider the social aspects of life in a ‘run-down’ council estate and respond by completing a series of related tasks. Included are a range of SPaG questions that have been compiled to emulate a formal SPaG test to help pupils familiarize themselves with the format. Also included is a set of ‘stand-alone’ worksheets. All illustrations used are by ‘Clipart’.

The Real Dickensians- Working Children of the Potteries (Years 7 and 8)

A unit of work that contains an abundance of pictures, anecdotes and reports based on the 'Scriven Report', which investigated the working conditions in the factories of 'The Potteries' in the mid 1800s. Students use grids, writing frames and summarising placemats to investigate and report on the working lives of young children, and to develop their ability to organise non-fiction writing. The VLE homework unit develops and embeds students' understanding of 'main idea' and 'supporting details' by using further extracts from the report.
