My style is very much about class participation, student ownership of learning and quick pace. Lessons come with starters, plenaries, paired, group and independent activities which last from 5 /10 / 15 / 20 and 30 mins at a time. I teach 3 hour sessions therefore all lesson have enough material to fill 3 hours. I also like to base parts of my sessions around pop culture and current issues in order to engage students and demonstrate that English is not a subject or skill confined to the classroom but rather it is a life long skill with real relevance in the world. I also like English to have an element of fun and try to encourage students to have fun with language and encourage creativity. Many lessons cover a range of levels as I teach mixed level classes, I use supportive techniques such as sentence starters, word banks and peer assessment and self assessment.

WJEC GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE -paper 2 question A6

WJEC GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE -paper 2 question A6

This is a full lesson with 3 hours worth of resources and activities. This session breaks down and examine the comparative question A6 from paper 2 (WJEC / EDUQAS exam board) by using 2 texts which describe Manchester at different periods, Engels from 1844 and Bill Bryson from 1995. This session encourages independent / discovery learning and is filled with quick paced paired activities in which the students work together to identify and source conclusions from the text given. There is a short class discussion fore the students pool all their findings together in order to come up with a structured answer. Work sheets and support material is available to support weaker students and a starter paragraph is available to get the students into the swing of writing a prepared exam style answer. There is a start and plenary included in the session but there is also enough room for this session to be adapted any way you need it in order to suit your own students and teaching style. Please keep mind that TES previews sometimes distorts the PPT slides and this is not a reflection of how the resource looks. Hope it helps

AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES, THE STOLEN GENERATIONS

AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES, THE STOLEN GENERATIONS

These two videos deal with Autralian Aborigines , a glimpse at their history and way of life, and the topic of the stolen generations. I have only used parts of the two videos (the times are clearly indicated on the worksheet). The first part of the worksheet deals with the general background; the second part deals more specifically with the official apology presented by the Autralian government to the Aborigines. Skills: oral comprehension oral expression The tasks are very guided to help weaker students since they may have trouble understanding the videos.

ESL/EFL Speaking Activity Based On Iconic Photos

ESL/EFL Speaking Activity Based On Iconic Photos

I based this activity on 10 iconic photos, but you can add more that are more local or more significant for your country. This activity is a great starter for discussion about human rights, democracy, and equality, which are things that our modern society still struggles with. I recommend using this activity with students 16+ as the photos may be disturbing for younger students. I hope you find it useful.

AQA GCSE English Paper 2 Question 4 - Immigration and refugees

AQA GCSE English Paper 2 Question 4 - Immigration and refugees

This resource is an entire lesson with enough material to fill up a 3 hour session or 2 smaller sessions. The session aim to help students practice their skills for paper 2 question 4, the comparison between a modern and older text on the same theme / topic. The topic of this session is immigration and looks at the immigration of Irish people to America and modern day Syrian refugees and underpins the idea of equality and compassion. Comparison materials are a letter written in 1884 and a poem written in 2017. I have found that in a world of fake news, memes and multicultural classrooms that students are very interested in these topics as they are often unsure of today's world and it's politics. This is a lesson which is designed to let the students do most of the thinking and analysing and is a perfect session to deliver as exam dates become nearer and they need to become more independent in delivering answers and insight. There are plenty of short timed paired and team activities which build up students knowledge and insight and ends with a chance to deliver a exam style answer and a short self assessment. Worksheets come with support material to help those who struggle and open questions to push those who are more capable. Please keep in mind that at times the TES preview somehow distorts slides and worksheets and that is not reflective of how the resource will look when downloaded. Hope it helps.
