Three statistics lessons based on the World cup. On Averages, Stem and Leaf diagrams and Scatter Diagrams. These are flipcharts but if you use notebook you should be able to import them. The majority of this is my own work with a few bits with thanks to others who have shared their resources freely.

This investigation looks at different aspects of the Maths curriculum linked to P.E and sports. The children do not have to be good at football to take part. #### Census Or Sample?

During this lesson students collect data about the biodiversity of their schoolyard. Using this data they calculate the biodiversity index of the area of the schoolyard they personally analysed and compare this with other areas around the school to calculate a total average for the schoolyard. They reflect on their results to suggest options for increasing the biodiversity of their school. This lesson is designed to be taught outside. By spending time outdoors and connecting to nature, students are more likely to care for and conserve nature as adults.

This resource uses a map of the football stadiums used in the 2018 football world cup. The children must use the information to answer the questions. There is a mark scheme provided so the children can self mark, or you can mark it yourself very quickly and easily. Four sets of “Crack The Safe” worksheets that get increasingly difficult regarding probability. These allow students to self-check rather than rely on the teacher as possible solutions are given, but more than required to prevent guessing. These work nicely as starters or plenaries for me.

#### World cup of Maths Football activity KS2/ KS3

Year groups KS2 and KS3 Learning objective: Comparing data using the mean, median and mode. Activity Students are to calculate the number equivalent of the letters in the names of the national teams taking part in the world cup. They are then to complete the mean, mode, median and range of the data. Each matchday they compare the specified result to find a winner. 3 Points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw. The teams are then to be placed in a league table, if teams are tied on points then the mode can be used to order them further.

COMPREHENSION This is a comprehension I made for my year 4 class. There are three different sets: one that can be used like a booklet, where the text and questions are on the same page with mostly retrieval questions one where the text is separate to the questions and questions are a mix of retrieval and more higher order including vocabulary one where the text is separate to the questions and questions are varied from giving evidence from the text to vocabulary questions etc. I think it can be used with high year 2 as well as KS2. The actual information text is attached as reading sheet. This resource is designed to challenge L1 and L2 Functional Skill students and can also be used for students from year 7 - 11. The activity is designed to engage students who are interested in football with different areas of maths. The key skill for students to develop through the completion of this resource is their organisation of numbers and data. Addition, subtraction and multiplication are all included throughout the activity. Students must calculate the club’s annual income and expenditure and make decisions on which players to sell in order to ‘balance the books’ and keep the club afloat. For convenience, answers are provided in italic red.

#### Football World Cup 2018 Whodunnit Activity Yr 6 Statistics

This is a ‘whodunnit’ type of activity linked to the Football World Cup trophy being stolen. Students need to work out how it was stolen, at what time and where is can now be found. On the sheet, they are given 6 possible answers for each part of the crime and each time they get an answer correct they are given a clue which enables them to cross out one or two of the possible answers. There are 10 statistics based questions which focus on the Year 6 objectives: Interpret pie charts and use these to solve problems Calculate and interpret the mean as an average This activity could be done as individuals, pairs and small groups. The answer sheet has 10 boxes for any working out. Simply print out the 10 questions, cut up and place around the classroom so students can move between them (or you could have them passed between students while they sit). I have included a QR code version too.
