The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde SOW (Low Ability and GCSE Friendly)

The premise of this SOW is to have frequent quizzes and comprehension questions to check understanding. Every lesson has a plenary quiz at the end to check comprehension and knowledge of the characters and the storyline. There are also recaps of particular terms like pathetic fallacy, narrative, gothic and narrator. The first two weeks are dedicated to a simplified version of contextual knowledge. I chose to omit Freud and the Id, Superego and Ego because it is designed for low ability. But you can add and alter the SOW and alter the fortnightly quizzes to add questions and reteach sheets on this if you wish. The activities are designed to be for low ability in the sense that they are given sentence starters whenever they do discussion pair work and they also do bingo cards for chapter reading. Audiobooks are attached to the reading parts. There is an assessment right at the end of the unit on whether or not Mr Hyde is a frightening character. Bonus: there are fortnightly quizzes with answers and reteach sheets, with time allocated in the SOW to have reflection and review of learning time.

The first lesson, The American West c1835 -c1895. In this lesson students are introduced to the physical geography of North America whilst developing their decision-making, critical thinking and literacy skills. An early explorer is making a trip to Oregon from Missouri and he needs help in deciding which route to take. He has three option. Your class will need to assess each route based on its landscapes and physical features before making a recommendation. Literacy support included for the write up. There are additional activities incorporated into the PowerPoint, for example ‘complete an illustrated and annotated map of North America’ (map template included). These lessons take many hours to plan and create, so any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Body Snatchers: Medicine, Crime & Frankenstein

The early 19th Century saw many advances in science and medicine, in a time where scientific and religious ideas often clashed over what was morally correct. These ideas are explored in nineteenth century literature such as the novel Frankenstein, but the stories in the real world were often as shocking and brutal as the Gothic fantasy. This lesson explores the business of the grave robber and how they furthered the study of medicine through a grey area of the law. This lesson can be used as part of several fields of study for GCSE, including: Crime and Punishment History of Medicine/Health and the People Social Reform of the early 1800s Historical Context of ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley. The confessions of Bishop and May describe their daily lives in great detail. The full confessions are twelve pages long each, and so have been presented as extracts to provide the most relevant sections describing one particular case. The initial task can be completed as group work, in carousel, or individually as its own lesson before moving on to the rest of the sources. Care should be taken in providing the source describing the murder to students. The final source shows the on going effects of the Act over twenty-five years later, asking students to consider these sources in the context of a larger narrative.
