Higher Non Calc Problem solving questions with answers, from Edexcel Problem sets

Higher Non Calc Problem solving questions with answers, from Edexcel Problem sets

I have put together a selection of problems from the Edexcel problem solving packs 2, 3 and 4. The questions should all be suitable for the non calculator papers and include solutions. I have also included some questions that are deemed to be calculator paper questions but can be answered without a calculator to further enhance and practise problem solving skills. I printed them out on A3 sheets and allowed students to work as a group of 3 -4 to solve the problems - feedback from students was positive.

Maths / STEM Project Lesson - Data Analyst

Maths / STEM Project Lesson - Data Analyst

This is a project lesson for 50 - 75 minutes based around interpreting data, understanding proportions, calculating percentages and statistical enquiry. The theme of this lesson is to emphasise the importance of data analysis in varied fields of life, and includes three specifically designed data sets based around sports, performance and financial analysis. Students will have to answer a series of questions related to the 3 data sets to help prepare them to write a mini report detailing their findings. These questions and level of data analysis are similar to what many companies use as the basis of their graduate recruitment maths tests, with candidates expected to interpret data in different forms and draw correct conclusions based on sound explanations. Having ran this session multiple times, students are very engaged with the content and like seeing how maths will be used in real work places. It could be done in classes, or as a larger scale event. I usually run it as a carousel, with different data sets on each table and getting students to rotate around, but again delivery is flexible. The 3 data sets are: Sports Analysis - Wiltshire Wanderers. Students have to evaluate player performance over a season by working out things such as number of goals scored per game. Financial Analysis - Netdrive Sales. Students have to evaluate sales performance of 4 products, calculating things such as most profitable periods, profit per item and percentage profit. Performance Analysis - Silent Night Hotels. Students look at the performance of various hotels in a fictional chain and pick out positives and negatives of each one.

Laurel vs. Yanny Lesson

Laurel vs. Yanny Lesson

This is a Powerpoint lesson and worksheet based on the ‘Laurel or Yanny’ soundclip debate that is going viral! When people listen to the clip, some people seem to hear it as ‘Laurel’ and others seem to hear ‘Yanny’. This fun lesson is a simple data handling activity that can be made suitable for KS2 or KS1 classes. Pupils will listen to the sound clip and then record the responses in a frequency table and block graph, Included in the Powerpoint are also some data processing questions, starting with straight forward questions that simply require intepreting of the data for younger classes and going on to more difficult questions involving fractions, percentages and ratios for KS2. Included in this resource: Powerpoint file (fully editable) Worksheet

Functional Skills L1 Revision Questions and Facts Cards. Matching or Flash cards. 40 cards.

Functional Skills L1 Revision Questions and Facts Cards. Matching or Flash cards. 40 cards.

Here are some revision cards I made after reviewing the chief examiners report for functional skills maths at level 1. I needed some new revision materials and I know learners often like to make revision cards. Here we have double sided cards which can be used in a few different ways. They are colour coded for number, shape space and measure and statistics. Plus 3 challenge cards in black. Plenty of challenge for even the most able L1 learners. Print the cards off and fold them over so you have flash cards with functional skills type questions on one side and the answers on the back. All answers have the maths facts associated with the questions and then a worked solution so the learners can see how to apply the knowledge to an actual question. Always more useful then just having a fact or an answer and excellent modeling of practice for learners who have up coming exams . Can be given out to take home and as such I have kept the pictures to a minimal to keep the printing costs lower. I have also used these cards cut up into answers and questions and given out for the learners to match them up, like matching cards and they can then photograph the cards when completed for further revision. Finally when learners are completing functional skills practice papers these cards are handy for the learners to refer to. After you have helped them you can collect a relevant card and test them to ensure they have now understood a topic they were struggling with. Instead of just giving them the answer try and solve a similar functional sills style question with them and then see if they can apply it to the paper. Level 2 will also be coming soon. Please see my shop letsgetfunctional for loads of revision activities for functional and GCSE maths. Please note if purchasing for use with GCSE maths these cards cover lots of functional skills topics but they do not cover topics which are not on the functional skills exam papers! For example probability trees, prime numbers and factors are not necessary to be taught and I like to keep my functional skills revision activities relevant to help functional skills learners pass their test without confusing them. The following topics are included: Fractions Percentages Rounding Converting fractions to a percentages Area and Perimeter and Volume Scale Plan Checking Calculations Mean and Range Bar Charts and Tables Converting metric units Practical problems Ratio Challenge questions (x 3)

Experimental Probability using Revels Sweets

Experimental Probability using Revels Sweets

A great way to recap probability or introduce the idea of experimental probability and tree diagrams. Lots of avenues for extension. I used 1 standard (small) pack of revels between 3 pupils and let them work in groups - watch out for allergies! You can build the tables and tree diagram for one group on the board if necessary but it’s also handy to discuss good data collection tables and bad ones. There are lots of questions to answer on the slides but you can also extend groups to create their own questions and investigate their data further. Discussing which group had the best pack based on the contents is also sure to raise a debate! If you use this resource please leave a review!

Go and Find - Probability Revision Activity

Go and Find - Probability Revision Activity

A fun class activity. I call it “Go and Find”. Give each pair of pupils an answer sheet, and they have to ‘collect’ tabs of paper from around the classroom, each with an answer on them. There aren’t enough answers for every pair to get one each, so they are competing against eachother. They lose points for incorrect answers, and there are a few red herrings to catch misconceptions. Takes a bit of set up but well worth it! Answers, pupil instructions and example of pupil work included. Can be adapted for different abilities, just be sure to change the answers on the excel document. Please leave feedback if you use this in class; I haven’t seen resources like this on tes so would love to know how it works in other classrooms!

Click 👉 tes.com/…/bundles… for booklet bundles of the other strands.
I have put all my STATISTICS booklets together in this one convenient download. I hope that this is helpful to you.
The questions in these booklets are in the style of actual SATs questions and are designed to be printed as A4 or A5. KEY POINTS: I have provided full answers, with comments and working where helpful. I have maintained the style of the actual SATs questions so that students can become comfortable with the way that SATs questions are presented. Most of the questions are from actual SATs papers, but I have also added questions so that this resource matches the requirements the current curriculum better than the older resources that are still in common use (note that many of the older resources of this type contain questions on topics which are no longer examined). I have spent a lot of time arranging the questions so that there is a general increase in difficulty as students work through them, and so that they fit on the pages better – this means less wasted space and significant paper-saving when printing 😃
👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬.
