Reading Comprehension - short exercise using true/false/fact/opinion

I sometimes find children can be slightly unclear on the actual difference between fact and opinion. This always seems to come up in the SAT reading papers so I constructed this short exercise that incorporates a passage on New York. Should serve well as a 10 minute starter that can be discussed as a class afterwards. Alternatively, it could serve as a shared class reading exercise.

Samuel Pepys' diary entries - adapted for children

Samuel Pepys' diary entries - adapted for children

I adapted each of Samuel Pepys’ original diary entries (plus one of John Evelyn’s) into writing that my students would be able to understand and used them for whole class reading lessons. There is a diary entry plus literal & inference questions for each of the following dates: Sunday 2nd September 1666 Monday 3rd September 1666 Tuesday 4th September 1666 Wednesday 5th September 1666 Thursday 6th September 1666 Please note that although I have adapted the diary entries, they are still somewhat difficult to read because I kept as true to the original as I could. My high attaining Year 2 class was able to understand each of the entries and answer the literal and inference questions but my lower attaining students struggled. The original diary entries from 1666 can be found here: https://www.pepysdiary.com/diary/1666/09/02/

Editing Checklist (for writing)

Editing Checklist (for writing)

I created this editing checklist for my students so that they can look over their writing, go through the checklist and make corrections, then they can put their initials in the column by each section. Students can even have a peer-partner look over their writing and make edit suggestions and put their initials in the column by each section as well. I like this checklist because it guides my students through their writing, and helps them be more accountable for the editing process. I adapted this writing checklist from the Lucy Caulkins writing program.

The World News Crossword - July 22nd, 2018

The World News Crossword - July 22nd, 2018

The World News Crossword - July 22nd, 2018 is a 6-page PDF document made up of 4 puzzles based on the events of last week’s news. What’s in this week’s document? (1) A crossword based on the events of last week’s news, (2) A crossword all about Japan (which signed a free trade agreement with the EU and also experienced a devastating heatwave), (3) A crossword all about Libya (which closed its border with Tunisia and also did not approve the EU proposals to set up a refugee/migrant processing centre - did you know Libya has no permanent rivers?) and (3) A crossword all about Mother Teresa, whose orphanages in India were being inspected by authorities after accusations that staff had sold babies for adoption. (This puzzle is taken from our soon-to-be-released book, ‘Women who changed the world’.) **What happened in last week’s news? ** The EU fined Google for being very naughty and also signed a free trade agreement with Japan making trade easier. Libya closed its border with Tunisia, making trade impossible. Tourists were hurt by falling lava in Hawaii. Others drowned when their tour boat capsized in Missouri. China’s President went to Africa and the first commercial flight between Eritrea and Ethiopia occurred. Two Dutch men were arrested when they were caught on a boat with 2 tonnes of cocaine in the English Channel and French man was released from an Indonesian prison after 18 years for drug-smuggling. It turns out that Omega-3 won’t keep us safe from strokes and heart attacks, Cristiano Ronaldo is moving to Italy, and New Zealand beat France in the women’s rugby sevens world cup final.

This is an 11 lesson unit of work on the Great Fire of London. There is a medium term plan and slides for every lesson and each lesson is focused on answering a question. I designed this for Year 2 but it could be adapted for older years if needed. These are the questions covered in the unit: L1: When did the Great Fire of London happen? L2: What was life in 17th century London like? L3: How did the fire start? L4: Why did the fire spread so quickly? L5: How do we know about the Great Fire now? L6: How did the rest of Britain learn about the Great Fire in 1666? L7: Who was Samuel Pepys? L8: What did Samuel Pepys see? L9: How did the Great Fire end? L10: What could have been done to end the fire sooner? L11: What happened after the Great Fire? I had originally planned to create a 12th lesson entitled “L12: What impact did the Great Fire have on modern-day London?” but I ran out of time to teach that lesson in the term.
