Hilbert's Grand Hotel

Hilbert's Grand Hotel

Enrichment lesson. Mr Hilbert and his wife own an unusual hotel: it has an infinite number of rooms! Every room is full, but then Mr Two turns up … I wrote these two worksheets for year 7’s, who loved it, but anyone up to Further Mathematicians would be excited by mathematician David Hilbert’s very accessible metaphor for countable infinity. Youtube clip (not mine) is a great introduction. Excel sheet is to record thinking. Using names Mr 1, Mr 2, ... and Miss 1, Miss 2,... for guests helps clarify thoughts. Wikipedia article gives explanation and answers if you've never met this before!
