Areas of 2D Shapes: BODMAS, and Algebra Problem Solving

7 page pdf booklet. Reminders of the rules (along with shape diagrams with dimensions) for obtaining the areas of squares, rectangles, triangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, and trapeziums are provided. There are 10 questions asking students to find missing areas, heights and widths using number values required for substitution into formulae provided for such 2D shapes. Three example algebraic problems are then reviewed and full workings (with reminders about BODMAS) provided: 1) Substitution of an x value into length and width expressions to find a missing area of a rectangle; 2) Finding the value of x given an area value for a rectangle, and length and width in terms of x; 3) Finding the value of x and a width given expressions in x for opposite lengths in a rectangle as well as its value of area. These examples are followed by another 10 questions for more able students requiring substitution of algebraic terms into such area formulae as per the 3 examples provided.

The children are being asked to draw shapes in their book or onto a separate piece of paper. The children will be practicing and developing their skills when using a ruler, the more able children have to draw to a precise mm. More advanced learners will have to draw rectilinear irregular shapes.

This resource has been created in Microsoft Excel and is designed to be used as a test or practice test for Year 9 Measurement. Knowledge assessed includes: Perimeter, area, volume, total surface area and conversion between units in one, two and three dimensions. Admittedly, this resource does not comprehensively allow students to demonstrate knowledge at the A level against the Australian Curriculum for Year 9 as there is only one challenging worded problem at the end. I created this resource because I love having students ask for practice questions, but hate writing new questions and their solutions. This resource contains multiple choice questions and short answer questions as well as a solutions tab to each question for printing solutions. All values, and most worded problems are randomly generated from the 'Variables' tab to produce a unique set of questions when F9 (Windows) or fn F9 (Mac) are pressed. Most multiple choice questions will have their answer order randomized. Solutions are generated to match.

Design Santa's Sleigh with Geometry & Measure

This math project is a fun way for the children to practice their skills with geometry and critical thinking as they follow the instructions on the differentiated task cards to design their own sleigh for Santa. Using the Ask – Plan – Think – Design -strategy of the design process, the children will look at various forms of travel, including different types of sleigh. This can be done independently or in small, cooperative groups. They will then use their knowledge of geometry to plan their own design for Santa. The rigour comes when they HAVE to include various forms of geometry into their design. Included: Lines Rays Angles Intersecting lines Parallel lines Etc. You could of course, add in other geometrical aspects as you wish to suit your class’ needs. It is quick and easy for you to prepare and will take up 2-3 math periods to complete.
