EXCERPT: Redon spent 1890 to 1900 going back and forth from his black media to his color media. In 1897, he made a color lithograph. Did it satisfy his need for color? Apparently not because it was just three years later that he left everything but pastels and oil paints behind. Redon fell fully in love with color. He worked with pastels and oil paints, painting butterflies and flowers to suggest life and creation. His art became more tranquil and contemplative. This fit his aim of encouraging the viewer to dream and meditate using his artwork. He made suggestiveness part of his art. The viewer participates actively in interpreting the work. This art was also to be a sanctuary for the viewer. Redon also felt an increased affinity with music and compared musical harmonies to his art. At the end of his career, Redon made into the famous Armory Show. This was the International Exhibition of Modern Art, organized by the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, in 1913 in New York City. Seventy-six of Redon’s paintings, pastels, drawings and prints were included in the show. He received widespread critical approval plus was the best-selling artist in the exhibition. This was the first large exhibition of modern art in America. It was a stunning finish to his career.

Children will investigate the Ancient Kingdom of Benin, as outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum of England History standards. The English units that are included are Narrative Texts (involving elephant hunting), Persuasive Texts (about returning stolen art to modern Nigeria), Information Texts (about poaching), and Explanation Texts (about artistic choices on a commemorative Oba head).
