Sometimes our higher ability pupils slip through the net because we are focusing our efforts on helping our students who on the verge, to succeed. I have done a lot of extra work this year to really challenge my most able students, funnily enough this has created a drive within the laziest pupils in my class. The resource i’ve attached is a review paper on Polydactyly, I shared this with my whole class even though It was to target my most highest achievers and encouraged them to all read the article as homework. Scientific reviews/articles expose students to scientific knowledge that goes above and beyond the requirements of the specification, it helps students develop an interest and love for science which then leads to better interaction in lessons. I would recommend doing the required practical after the plant and animal cells lesson. AQA spec link: 1.1.5 Relevant chapter: B1 Cell structure and transport. AQA Biology third edition textbook-Page 4-5 Specification requires students to know the following; Students should be able to: • understand how microscopy techniques have developed over time • explain how electron microscopy has increased understanding of sub-cellular structures. Limited to the differences in magnification and resolution. An electron microscope has much higher magnification and resolving power than a light microscope. This means that it can be used to study cells in much finer detail. This has enabled biologists to see and understand many more sub-cellular structures. WS 1.1 Students should be able to carry out calculations involving magnification, real size and image size using the formula: magnification = size of image size of real object Students should be able to express answers in standard form if appropriate. MS 1a, 1b, 2h, 3b WS 4.4 Use prefixes centi, milli, micro and nano.

AQA Biology third edition textbook-Page 8-9 Specification requires students to know the following; Plant and animal cells (eukaryotic cells) have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material enclosed in a nucleus. Bacterial cells (prokaryotic cells) are much smaller in comparison. They have cytoplasm and a cell membrane surrounded by a cell wall. The genetic material is not enclosed in a nucleus. It is a single DNA loop and there may be one or more small rings of DNA called plasmids. Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the scale and size of cells and be able to make order of magnitude calculations, including the use of standard form. C10-Chemical analysis-Gas test lesson created in accordance to the NEW AQA Specification (9-1). Designed for a low ability year 11 class, although content can be adjusted to suit any ability. Includes: slide animations, embedded videos and practice questions with answers on slides as well as method for each test. I strongly recommend that you allow your students to practice the Hydrogen pop test (if they're good), went down really well with my class and was easy for them to recall the method in the class test they did. The rest of the tests can be demonstrated fairly easily and personally getting each student to do every test would've taken me well over an hour. AQA spec link: 5.8.2.1-4 The test for hydrogen uses a burning splint held at the open end of a test tube of the gas. Hydrogen burns rapidly with a pop sound. The test for oxygen uses a glowing splint inserted into a test tube of the gas. The splint relights in oxygen. The test for carbon dioxide uses an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (lime water). When carbon dioxide is shaken with or bubbled through limewater the limewater turns milky (cloudy). The test for chlorine uses litmus paper. When damp litmus paper is put into chlorine gas the litmus paper is bleached and turns white.

Unit 2-Practical scientific procedures and techniques Learning aim D: Review personal development of scientific skills for laboratory work. How did i teach this? This assignment allows students to review the skills they attained in this unit. It also reiterates the importance of H&S as well as professional practice. Before setting the assignment i first taught three lessons covering the content in Pearson BTEC national-Applied science-Student book 1. Due to the complexity of this assignment i provided my students with a template which covered the P/M/D criteria (download the free template). This prevented students from going off on a tangent and also ensured they had mentioned the key skills for both assignment B and C. NB: Personal responsibility is the first of the three lessons. Cracking can be done by various methods including catalytic cracking and steam cracking. Students should be able to describe in general terms the conditions used for catalytic cracking and steam cracking. The products of cracking include alkanes and another type of hydrocarbon called alkenes. Alkenes are more reactive than alkanes and react with bromine water, which is used as a test for alkenes. Students should be able to recall the colour change when bromine water reacts with an alkene. There is a high demand for fuels with small molecules and so some of the products of cracking are useful as fuels. Alkenes are used to produce polymers and as starting materials for the production of many other chemicals. Students should be able to balance chemical equations as examples of cracking given the formulae of the reactants and products. Students should be able to give examples to illustrate the usefulness of cracking. They should also be able to explain how modern life depends on the uses of hydrocarbons. Dont’t know if you’ve felt the same but my year 11 students really struggled to grasp punnett squares through a couple of worked examples so I designed a booklet solely focused on punnett square PPQ’s with some very challenging questions. As always total marks /21, not too short or too long to take up an entire lesson. A marking grid has also been included. Contains a range of short and longer answer questions also requires students to interpret diagrams. This is a great piece of homework or mini class test, that can allow you to determine whether your students have understood the topic. I’ve attached the mark scheme separately as it’s a great self/peer-assessed activity (reduce the marking load).
