THE KIMBERLEY COASTLINE OF NORTHWEST WESTERN AUSTRALIA - PART 1 EUROPEAN ORIGIN OF PLACE NAMES

This unit could be used as a standalone web/atlas mapping activity and/or as an introductory unit to the series on the cultural and physical features found along this remote coastline. Used as a mapping activity students are required to use computers to locate places listed in the table on page 2 so that they can match the numbers to the circles given on the maps on page 2 (colour) or page 3 (black and white). The maps are provided as attachments. The maps and diagrams on page 5 indicate that Aboriginal people were the first to enter the area now known as the Kimberley. A final page is provided with the complete list of circled numbers which can be placed on a screen for students to check their research.
This unit is also designed as the opening unit on a series of explorations along the Kimberley Coast. The series provides details on unique coastal features (Horizontal Falls/Montgomery Reef); coastal ecology/ecosystems; Aboriginal Rock Art; A DC3 plane crash;coastal geomorphology;the role of mangroves. Follow the series and take your students into this spectacular coastal area of Australia.
