Hairspray - Movie Task and Teacher Notes

A worksheet and Teacher guide that can be used with the film Hairspray. The course is designed in a way that the film can be periodically stopped and discussed and pupils are able to engage in discussions and debates about the content. The pupil sheets are there to help guide discussion but it is up to the teacher’s professional judgement where the discussion may go. This guide is to help facilitate this discussion. There is also some extension tasks the class can work on should you feel appropriate. Main themes covered - Racism, Beauty, 1960’s America, Civil Rights This Unit will take 4-5 weeks to complete depending on discussion and extension tasks.

My students loved this quiz - particularly the headline writing and music intros round! 5 rounds of general knowledge questions suitable for year 6 and above. Film and TV, Children’s Literature, News Headline picture round, royal wedding, and a music round with clips from YouTube linked Make sure you freeze the screen or hide the video. All the inbetween slides are included too - team names, swapping papers, answers, marking and handing in. I have provided an answer sheet for students to complete, but they could also do this on spare paper if photocopying is an issue. So long as you have the PowerPoint, you’re good to go. Getting It Together: From Colonies to Federation - The National Story

‘Getting It Together: From Colonies to Federation’ is a middle years resource provided by the Museum of Australian Democracy. This extensive resource examines Australia’s journey to federation using historical sources such as newspaper extracts, cartoons, speeches and biographies. Students can use ‘Getting It Together’ to actively discover and explore the story of Federation – the social and political journey that led the people of six separate colonies to agree on a Constitution, which brought the nation of Australia and its Federal Parliament into being in 1901. While investigating the past, students are also engaged with issues affecting Australia’s development and identity today and into the future. ‘Getting it Together’ is organised into seven packages each containing a series of activities for students to explore in the classroom. This package, ‘The National Story,’ brings all of the colonial stories together. Other packages focus on New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. Afterlife: what happens when we die?

Included in this is a PPT containing a discussion based lesson of approximately 55 minutes. There is a differentiated success criteria for each student to aim for and assess themselves against at different points as a mini-plenary as well as a challenge question to consider throughout. It is a primarily discussion based lesson on what can be a very sensitive subject. For the main activity there is an explanation of how to best present your example and the conclusion of the activity which MUST be read prior to teaching. This was taught to a year 5 mixed ability class but could easily work for KS2. Edit, use, adapt and enjoy!

The World News Crossword - May 20th, 2018

The World News Crossword - May 20th, 2018 is a teaching and learning activity based on the events of last week’s news. There is a crossword on last week’s news events, there are two background/explainer search and cloze puzzles (The Venezuela crisis and Jerusalem), and there is another crossword based on a country mentioned in the news crossword (this week it’s Comoros). What happened in last week’s news? India inaugurated a hydro-electric dam that prompted protests from Pakistan because it affects water flowing into the Indus River. Ebola cases were reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and 4000 vaccine doses arrived in Kinshasa. Comoros’ ex-president was arrested on charges relating to selling citizenship. Malaysia’s ex-PM’s residence was raided of bags of cash and jewelry. A mountain lion killed a mountain biker in the US. Hawaii’s volcano erupted, prompting more evacuations. Australia and the US were the only countries to vote against a UN investigation into the Israeli killings of Palestinians in Gaza. The two background/explainer puzzles aim to teach more about ongoing news stories. This week there is an explanation of why Jerusalem is central to the Middle East troubles. There is also an explanation of Venezuela’s economic and human crisis. These puzzles are excellent for driving students’ research skills. When students work in small groups they learn cooperation and team work. They help with concentration and, of course, handwriting. But best of all, these puzzles generate real-world discussions. The students leave the less asking questions like, ‘Why would North Korea even want nuclear weapons and why does the US care?’ ‘Why does China want a military base in the South China Sea?’ ‘Why have some UK supermarkets added a ‘plastic-free’ label on some products?’

The British Red Cross has produced a new resource for Refugee Week which takes place 18-24 June. The new resource for 7–14 year-olds helps develop understanding of what might cause someone to leave their home. Through real-life case studies, films and creative writing, learners will increase empathy towards refugees and learn about shared interests, such as music.
