The Power to Persevere: Lesson Plan & Film

Students watch a short film, "Making it in America," by Joris Debeij, about a single mother and Salvadoran immigrant struggling to realize her goals in America. In this lesson, students learn about the sacrifices many immigrants make as they transition to lives in the United States and the perseverance needed to succeed. Students explore the concepts of, "The American Dream," and, "Land of Opportunity," in relation to the immigrant experience as well as to their own lives. Reflective writing prompts are also included for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story. English and Spanish versions of the lesson plan are available for download.

New Spanish GCSE: Theme 2(Local, regional, international and global areas of interest). Translations

A very comprehensive set of sentences (suitable for all abilities) and paragraphs (mainly higher) to translate from Spanish into English. The resource includes 91 sentences and six long paragraphs and they cover the following aspects of Theme 2 (Local, regional, international and global areas of interest), organised as follows: Part 1: Home, town, neighbourhood and region Part 2: Social issues (charity/voluntary work; healthy, unhealthy living) and Global issues (the environment; poverty/homelessness) Part 3: Travel and tourism Finally, the six longer paragraphs include language related to all three categories. The sentences include references to a variety of tenses (present, preterite, imperfect, present perfect, conditional, future), as well as a wide range of complex structures (negatives, comparatives, conditional clauses...)

Use this activity with younger children to create ‘WANTED’ posters for family homes for our rescued galgos. Older children can create campaign posters to raise awareness of the plight of the galgo, and to help stop galgos being ill-treated and abandoned.
