Enlarging Shapes on a Grid

Students learn how to enlarge shapes objects on a grid using a centre and scale factor. Learning progresses from enlarging shapes to a positive scale factor to fractional scale factors. More able students are challenged to describe as well as perform enlargements by finding the centre and scale factor. The start of the lesson recaps describing translations using vectors. At the end of the lesson students are challenged to perform and describe enlargements on an isometric grid. Differentiated Learning Objectives All students should be able to enlarge an object using a positive integer scale factor and centre. Most students should be able to perform and describe an enlargement to a positive integer scale factor and centre. Some students should be able to perform and describe an enlargement to a positive fraction scale factor and centre.

Christmas Transformations

Here is another set of transformation pictures that will create a lovely Christmas scene. There is a reindeer and Christmas tree which only require multiple translations to create, the other snow man and reindeer involve a mixture of rotations, reflections and translations. All the worksheets are as pictures to help preserve the positions of each piece that needs to be transformed. These have been double checked for mistakes but if any are found do let me know! Hope these prove to be useful and an enjoyable task to end the long autumn term on!

Vector Notation Starter

Vector Notation Starter

This is a simple and quick exercise to match 4 translations with 4 vectors. This could of course be used as a quick recap at the start of a lesson having previously introduced the concept however I have most often used this BEFORE I teach students about vector notation. We explore the idea of translation using words like up, down, left, right etc... and then I give them the exercise to see if they can work it out for themselves. They always do :) One fun way to introduce translations is by showing a video of American line dancing! Youtube has plenty.
