Using Trigonometry and Similar triangles to find the distance of the stars and diameter of the Sun

A worksheet taking students through the parallax method of finding the distance to stars using SOHCAHTOA trigonometry and then an additional task on using similar triangles to find the diameter of the Sun. Suitable for Y9 classes onwards. The idea inspired by the nice resource from Greenwich Observatory: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/measuring-the-universe-ks4-11198074 - from which I used a couple of pictures. These congruence and similarity math stations are perfect to help your students make sense of congruent shapes, similar shapes, translations, rotations, reflections, dilations and coordinate rules. This product includes the following math stations. • Congruent vs. Similar: Given two shapes, students will determine if the shapes are congruent, similar, or neither and justify their reasoning. • Figures and Coordinate Rules: Given two shapes, students will describe the effect of the transformation using coordinates. • Analyzing Coordinate Rules: Given coordinate rules, students will explain in writing the transformation. • Drawing Transformations: Given a figure, students will reflect, rotate, translate, and dilate the figure and write the coordinate rule for the transformation. Each station will take about 15 – 20 minutes to complete. These would also be great to use as homework, group work or assessments. A recording sheet and answer sheet are included.

The conditions for congruence and therefore proving congruence in triangles are shown by way of worked exemplars. SSS, SAS, AAS & RHS are shown in detail before their use in calculating side lengths or chord lengths is demonstrated. At each step students are given an exercise that allows self assessment and fully worked out solutions to explore any gaps in understanding. Topic 8 of 20 in the Junior Geometry series begins by showing similar shapes and exploring what similarity means in maths so providing students with a definition and framework with which to work. Scale factors of enlargement are then explored by way of exemplar as well as teaching different techniques of drawing enlargements: either by using grid squares or using rays (straight lines) and the importance of the centre of enlargement. Further work demonstrating how to calculate enlargement using scale factors as well as calculating & using ratios leads students to being able to show for themselves that shapes are similar either by being equiangular or tat their sides are in proportion.
