RENE MAGRITTE - SURREALIST ARTIST - COMPLETE UNIT OF WORK

RENE MAGRITTE - SURREALIST ARTIST - COMPLETE UNIT OF WORK

This complete unit of work explores the life and work of Rene Magritte; a Belgium born Surrealist painter. As the pupils examine a range of his work they will learn more about the Surrealist movement. To further deepen their learning pupils are expected to respond on a personal level to his work using the vocabulary of the visual arts to express their observations. During the practical response, pupils will develop their artistic skills and processes using a variety of media to communicate meaning and intent. The unit of work contains an illustrated Power point presentation that is useful for whole class discussions relating to the ideals behind this movement. A chronology of Magritte’s life that includes points of interest to bring greater understanding of the man as an artist. There is also an array of creative tasks that focus on selected works of art for pupils to respond to in their own unique way. This unit of work is easily adapted to suit the needs of individual teachers. It can be covered in-depth over half a term or dipped-into as required. The Surrealist movement originally arose in response to the written word/poetry and as such Magritte’s work is a brilliant way to inspire creative/descriptive writing. The work produced in response to the chosen paintings [art or writing] is always remarkable and as unique as each pupil. All illustrations used have been tagged with Creative Commons licenses.

Visual Arts Investigation Winter Scenes

Visual Arts Investigation Winter Scenes

This lesson is based on one activity from a three day creative arts workshop I designed to ground a study of the science of seasons and solstices in the creative process. It presents three paintings of winter scenes to the students and asks them to explore them in small groups, referring to the elements of art. This activity places the student in the audience role; a curriculum requirement. This is designed for Stage 3 and 4 students. Critical thinking is required in both the role of critic, and in the extension activity, in the role of artist. This lesson is designed for a 1 hour block but could be extended over 2-3 hours with the extension activity. With some preparation, it is an ideal lesson to leave for a casual relief teacher.

The Secret Life of Objects - A Cross-curricular Creative Approach to Teaching and Learning

The Secret Life of Objects - A Cross-curricular Creative Approach to Teaching and Learning

A learning resource for teachers and educators which can be adapted for primary or secondary use and used across the curriculum with great results. This creative strategy has been devised for the Arts and Education Network: South East Wales by Karin Molson, Learning Manager at Monmouthshire Museums Service, Lucy-Ann Pickering, Learning Manager at The Royal Mint Museum, and Mark Batchelder , Learning Officer at The Winding House Museum. This pack aims to provide teachers with the following: – Stimulus to use and incorporate objects regularly into teaching and learning practice – A framework for the analysis of objects in museum and classroom contexts that does not rely on extensive subject knowledge – Creative techniques for critically looking and investigating objects including opportunities for sensory engagement – Bridging techniques to draw out the creative character of objects, either through mind mapping or character profiling – A range of potential creative outputs inspired by objects – A range of strategies/techniques for getting the most out of a museum visit or using objects in the classroom The Secret Life of Objects resource pack contains activity ideas for engaging with objects, an Object Investigation Framework (OIF), exemplars and ideas for creative outputs. The resource uses a simple step-by-step process that will lead you and your pupils from initial object engagement to creative activity.

FORMAL ELEMENTS MIND MAP QUICK STUDENT PROMPT

FORMAL ELEMENTS MIND MAP QUICK STUDENT PROMPT

An aide memoire for students who need quick prompts for analysing work - especially Graphic Design - this can be printed A4 but best at A3 - I laminate the classroom copies. The areas are colour coded (ie Typography, Mood, Colour , composition ) to help guide the students visually. Hope this helps. I’ve found it really useful especially once the students have a grounding in analysis.
