Persuasive Writing Plan

I made the link between boxing and writing. When trying to persuade we need to not only put forward our strongest 2-3 arguments (throw our strongest 2-3 punches), we also need to defend ourselves against any opponent's argument (block) and then say why it isn't a good enough reason against our argument (counter punch). This simple plan really helped my students work out what exactly they were arguing for and against and how to formulate a counter argument. The boxing analogy - which we acted out - really helped them understand what a counter-argument actually was. I had my class of 8 year old kids in Japan write a persuasive argument in favour of a chosen energy source with a counter argument. This was not an easy task - the fact they all managed to achieve the end goal was in large part to the solid foundations this plan gave them.

This SPAG Revision Year 2 Punctuation Revision and Practice resource has been designed with whole class revision in mind. I have set the presentation so that you can click onto the next example/question when ready. You may have instances where students ask questions or you may wish to expand on a specific section, so basically you can go at your own speed or pause and come back to it. The PowerPoint includes exactly what is required for Year 2 punctuation, with clear examples for revision and follow up practice questions. Using an interactive white board/basic white board, students can use the appropriate markers to fill in the missing punctuation. I have structured each practice section to progress in degrees of difficulty, to ensure appropriate challenge for all ability levels. Day 2 of my Roald Dahl themed Summer Camp (originally for Korean EFL students) Includes: * A short summary of the story- using images from the film and Quentin Blake illustrations * A board game and counters that I made (the same rules as 'snakes and ladders') *Team activity 'Egg Drop' where students must construct a contraption using art supplies to protect their egg when it is dropped from a window. *Instructions to make decorative peach ornaments out of string, paint, balloons and PVA glue (original idea found on pinterest) *Links to recipes for making cookies, peach trifle, ladybird cracker snacks and peach pancakes. *Wordsearch and colouring worksheet. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory summer camp, worksheets, cooking and fun activities KS2 EFL TEFL

This was Day 1 of my Roald Dahl themed EFL summer camp. It includes art activities, games and cooking ideas based on the book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'.The day followed this plan: Introduction 1. Introduce the story and characters 2. Students use the worksheet to draw themselves in the style of Quentin Blake and write about their favourite things. 3. Allocate students into teams and they introduce themselves to the rest of their team. Team Games 1. Chocolate relay Race - Students must run to unwrap the chocolate twix bar and then feed it to the next person in their team. 2. Balloon Popping Game - In teams students must throw the darts to try and pop the balloons. The team to pop the most wins points. 3. Golden Egg and Spoon Race - Students must race around the room, against the other team, whilst balancing an egg on a spoon. If they drop the egg they must restart and go again. The winning team wins points. 4. Design a candy -Introduce different ingredients (unscramble the letters for EFL) -Taste Test (students try to describe what they are eating whilst blindfolded) - Introduce Willy Wonka’s strange inventions. - In teams the students must think of a new type of chocolate bar/candy. -Students draw and describe their invention using the worksheet and make posters. - Teams present their invention to the rest of the class (my personal favourites were flying insect sweets and 'King Candy' that tasted like gold and made you feel like royalty for an hour... kids can be so imaginative!) -The most interesting new candy invention will win points. Art and Crafts 1. Clay Photo frames -Using coloured card, PVA glue, paints and clay students decorate their individual photo frames. 2. Photobooth Props - Students make props and costumes for the photobooth- including small hats, funny hairstyles, bowties, cut out candy bars and golden tickets on sticks that they can hold and pose with. A group photo is then chosen and printed to go in the frame as a fun reminder of the camp. Cooking 1. Willy Wonka Bread - Students spread butter or Nutella onto their sliced bread and decorate with sprinkles. These sandwiches can be cut into shapes and eaten.. - As they eat their sandwiches students can watch the movie with subtitles. - If they finish early or don’t want to watch the movie they can complete the wordsearch worksheet. 2. Chocolate fondue and fruit slices on sticks. 3. Wonka fudge and Oompa Loompa cheesecake pops- I found these online and have included images and links to the recipes in the ppt. 4. Augustus Gloop Chocolate Slime -Again found online. I did not have time to try this with my students but there is a link to the instructions. *Not edible!

This Winter Write About The Picture has been created for emerging writers, with the goal of enabling students to achieve success with independent writing. Students have been provided with a word bank to help with spelling and encourage ideas for writing. To begin to extend sentences students have also been provided with colour words. They should first colour the picture with the ‘best’ colour, then use the finished coloured picture to enable them to begin to write longer sentences. This is the core of this resource. Teaching Points: • Students will need some prior knowledge of what it means to extend a sentence and the role that adjectives can play in this • Students should be encouraged to use as many colours as possible to colour their pictures I have added some extras to give students and teachers an element of choice- Differentiation: • Alternative handwriting lines • A second bordered page for students who wish to write at length • The photo section provides more difficult vocabulary and could lead more able writers towards a 'what happened next' story writing style, should the teacher wish to lead them in this direction • An editable version of all content has been provided for the teacher to make vocabulary choices. Just type your chosen words in each box!
