Do you need a PGCE to be a teacher?
No, you do not need a PGCE to teach in UK schools. This is an additional qualification that can be beneficial for prospective teachers; however, it is not required. PGCE qualifications typically offer more insight into teaching theory, educational practices and industry research, giving students a more thorough understanding of teaching as a whole.

Can you become a teacher with just a PGCE?
No, you cannot become a teacher in mainstream UK schools with just a PGCE. Whilst a PGCE offers a deep understanding of teaching and the underpinning theory, by itself, it is not a teacher training programme. To be a teacher in mainstream, state-funded schools in the UK, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is required.
What qualifications do I need to be a teacher in the UK?
To be a teacher in the UK, you must hold the minimum qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree

A teaching qualification. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is mandatory to teach in UK state-funded schools

GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, typically at grade 4 (C) or above

For primary teaching, you’ll also need a GCSE in Science

For secondary school teaching, you'll need to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, often through a relevant degree or A-levels. A Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course can also be taken to boost knowledge in specific subjects
Different training providers and schools may require specific criteria beyond those listed above; however, this list demonstrates the minimum requirements to teach in state-funded primary and secondary schools in the UK.
Your guide to becoming a teacher in the UK
For most people, the first step to becoming a teacher in the UK is to gain a bachelor's degree. If you wish to teach secondary school or above, it is recommended that this degree be in a relevant subject to what you want to teach, as you’ll need to demonstrate subject knowledge.
Alternatively, you can undertake undergraduate degrees which include Initial Teacher Training (ITT) and lead to QTS. However, it is essential to ensure that your chosen course provides QTS.
If your undergraduate degree does not include ITT/QTS, the next step would be to undertake a postgraduate course which includes ITT. Such courses typically take around 9 months (full-time) and involves mostly classroom placements with some theoretical knowledge. Note that not all PGCE courses lead to QTS.
Alternatively, if you have been working as an unqualified teacher for a minimum of two years, you may be eligible for Assessment Only - a teaching qualification route which does not require additional training. This typically takes up to 12 weeks.
