Fake news + Critical Thinking

(6)
A 90 mins - 2 hours fully-resourced PSHCE lesson all about the importance of critical thinking and being able to spot and debunk fake news. Students will begin by studying a dubious social media post, before learning all the skills and new terminology they need to take it apart, analyse it and be critical of it through comparison with a variety of credible sources (included). This has been created to fit with the new PSHE Association guidelines but would also be useful as a Citizenship or Media lesson. It lasts roughly 90 minutes if all tasks completed. The lesson includes a detailed PowerPoint, detailed information sheets, differentiated challenge activities and worksheets, clips tasks with questions and a debate focus task. These resources have been designed to be engaging, detailed and easy to follow. The lesson has been left editable and is filled with engaging, well differentiated and challenging activities. The PowerPoint is in the ZIP file as it is large. The images have been uploaded to show what is in the lesson :) Check out the EC Publishing website for full, affordable PSHE, Citizenship and RE Packages for all year groups including the new 2024 Complete PSHE Package. These speaking cards are aimed for year 12 and year 13 students, according to the new specifications. I have been carefully looking at the changes in the speaking test in A-levels and looking at the exam papers given by AQA. Due to the lack of any past exam papers, I have decided to create my own so that students have plenty of resources to be ready for the new A-levels exam.

The next activity is a copy and complete activity on survival and reproduction as a recap, after pupils have completed this task they can self-assess their work using the answers provided. Next pupils will be introduced to adaptations, pupils will then watch a video on adaptations and answer questions using the information provided. Once they have completed this task they can mark their work using the answers provided. Pupils will now read information posters around the room (resources provided at the end of the lesson) and will use this to complete adaptation profile cards for animals and plants from arctic and desert conditions. The next part of the lesson will focus on extremophiles, pupils will read an article on extremophiles and will read through and underline the descriptions of particular extremophile adaptations. Once this work has been self-assessed pupils will move on to an exam-style question on adaptations, once this task has been completed pupils can either self-assess or peer-assess their work. The plenary task is for pupils to write three quiz questions on the topic of the lesson. All resources are included at the end of the presentation. The brain (AQA New Specification)

(21)
AQA Science (New specification) lesson; differentiated for a low ability class. Interactive, with differentiated tasks. Addresses the following specification points from the Biology specification: 4.5.2.2 The brain The brain controls complex behaviour. It is made of billions of interconnected neurones and has different regions that carry out different functions. • The cerebral cortex is concerned with consciousness, intelligence, memory and language. • The cerebellum is concerned mainly with the coordination of muscular activity. • The medulla is concerned with unconscious activities such as heartbeat and breathing. Students should be able to identify these structures on a diagram of the brain. Does not address higher ability content: Neuroscientists have been able to map the regions of the brain to particular functions by studying patients with brain damage, electrically stimulating different parts of the brain and using MRI scanning techniques. The complexity and delicacy of the brain makes investigating and treating brain disorders very difficult.

I have created this PSHE based powerpoint and resources (worksheets are at the end of the powerpoint) for year 11 students, but it could be used with year 10 or KS5 students. It covers events such as going to a festival, going on holiday, commuting, moving home to uni and getting home from a night out. There is also a section on binge drinking and its effects on our ability to make safe decisions. The lesson links to the PSHE Association suggested Scheme of Work Planning Toolkit for key stages 3 and 4.
