A double-sided worksheet to practice forming the perfect tense using ‘avoir’ and regular -er verbs. I used this with my Year 8 class who are studying the perfect tense for the first time, but it could be useful revision for Year 9 or KS4 classes. Pupils have to form the past participle, choose the correct form of avoir and translate from French to English and then English to French. It could also be set as a homework task.
A worksheet (enough for at least a whole hour) to get students to recap and practice the perfect tense (regular verbs only - with avoir). Ideal for KS3 (learning the perfect tense) and KS4 (revision).
Can be set as cover or ideal for a Friday afternoon lesson :)
It includes:
a short section on past time indicators
a recap (for students to complete) of the 3 steps of the perfect tense
Practice exercices including translations and a guided dictation
A reading activity - which can be ideal to introduce the perfect tense with être - get students to spot it! But not needed to complete the activity.
There are two lengthy Power Points which will take several lessons to complete. By the end, pupils will be able to understand and successfully form the perfect tense of avoir verbs, both regular and irregular, as well as all être verbs. The Power Points can be used for pupils to create accurate grammar/ resource notes in their books, which they can then refer back to when working individually to form the past tense. On each PowerPoint there are lots of exercises for pupils to complete in order to check comprehension. A comprehensive worksheet accompanies each of the Power Points. There are also three further worksheets with exercises that could be used as class or homework and will indicate the pupils’ ability to understand and form this tense. This is a tried and tested method and will have your students being able to successfully form the perfect tense!
An introduction to the verbs avoir and etre in French, and a fill the gap activity to choose the correct present tense form to complete a sentence.
This is part of the Beginner’s French Year 3 Spring term resource, containing full lesson plans, links to videos and all resources, which is available from my shop. Please check all my other French resources there too!

PowerPoint recapping the conjugation of avoir in the present-tense, leading to explicit instruction of forming* le passé composé* with regular verbs. Starter is matching up translations relevant to the topic of la technologie and les reseaux sociaux.
Then, a quickfire mini-whiteboard quiz on the conjugations of avoir (good for AfL).
Followed by explanation of the ‘formula’ for the past tense, then a noughts and crosses game for students to produce language.
Concludes with a gap-fill reading activity written ‘from the POV of Mbappé’ for a bit of fun.
Homework consolidation task is to write their own short paragraph describing what they did last weekend.
I used this with my Year 10 group, but it can be adapted to suit different classes!
a one page worksheet revisiting subject pronouns and introducing the verb avoir with some practise tasks.
Perfect for the first “verb” lesson with year 7, or other beginner group
A4 posters in 72 font for legibility in class, includes present tense of avoir and avoir expressions with illustrations. Perfect for laminating and using as display material.
This resource could form the basis of a whole lesson. There is a presentation on expressions which use ‘avoir’ in French, but ‘to be’ in English. It is supplied in several formats:
an MP4 video which can be teacher controlled using the pause button.
a PDF version of the same material that can be used for classroom display.
a pupil notes version in black and white so that pupils can make lesson notes or use it for homework or revision.
For follow-up work, there is a multiple choice exercise. This contains a red herring - one of the verbs does not take avoir.
This French worksheet features 16 missing forms of the verb avoir in the present tense with special avoir expressions. Students must conjugate the verbs correctly to complete the sentences while reviewing these idiomatic expressions.
Includes answer key.
Editable word file.
Powerpoint slides of the present tense forms of avoir to colour in. Ideal for use as a calming starter activity.
Useful for when teaching the descriptions or perfect tense.
Pupils can colour each of the different verb forms in different colours to help them to learn them.
There are 4 identical slides for each verb so they can be printed either 1 ,2 or 4 per page depending on the size you require.
