Jekyll and Hyde Scheme of Work This well-presented PowerPoint contains twenty-four engaging one-hour lessons (326 slides) to fully prepare students for their GCSE exam. The lessons focus on AQA GCSE English Literature Paper 1, Section B (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). Please watch the attached YouTube video for a run through of a full lesson, as well as a demonstration of other features of the scheme. There are a wide range of tasks (listed below) that focus on building the skills needed for AO1, AO2, and AO3 - including practice questions, original model responses, extension tasks and text extracts. The PowerPoint includes a range of questions that are modelled on the exam (including a baseline and an end of unit assessment). Every chapter, key theme, and key character is covered. Additionally, there are also weekly exam-based homework tasks, and three extra exam-based questions that could be used as cover work, or as extra revision. To keep students engaged throughout, I have included a wide variety of methods to explore the text, its characters, and its themes, including: drama tasks, debates, creative writing, non-fiction writing, group planning, and even a lesson where they study graphology. To scaffold for my students, we read through the novel and highlighted every word that they were unfamiliar with. I have included a copy of the entire text in Microsoft Word format with easier synonyms next to each of these unfamiliar words to make ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ easier for the students to engage with. Areas Covered: Lesson 1: Introduction and Big Picture Lesson 2: Baseline Assessment Lesson 3: Context Presentations – Students to teach each other through independent research Lesson 4: Chapter One – Exploring quotations Lesson 5: Chapter Two – Settings that reflect characters Lesson 6: Chapter Three – Writing Utterson’s diary Lesson 7: Chapter Four – Learning how to plan effectively Lesson 8: Mr. Hyde – Response writing Lesson 9: Chapter Five - Graphology Lesson 10: Mr. Utterson – Exploring Utterson’s friendships Lesson 11: Chapter Six – A focus on Dr. Lanyon Lesson 12: Chapters Seven and Eight – Reading and discussion Lesson 13: The Gothic – Creative writing Lesson 14: Practice Exam Question Lesson 15: Chapter Nine – Performing the transformation Lesson 16: Chapter Ten – Part One – Non-fiction writing Lesson 17: Dr. Jekyll - Duality Lesson 18: Chapter Ten – Part Two - Repression Lesson 19: Characters – Collective planning tasks Lesson 20: Themes – Debating the key themes Lesson 21: Structural Features – A focus on the structure of the novel Lesson 22: Revision and Summary – Determining the moral Lesson 23: End of Unit Assessment Lesson 24: Drama – Exploring characters in more detail Extra: Three extra exam questions for use if cover work is needed. Jekyll and Hyde: Setting

(1)
This 18-slide lesson offers an introduction to Stevenson’s use of setting in ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’. We consider how Stevenson’s use of setting facilitates Hyde’s dark deeds and the Gothic atmosphere of the novella. How the author’s childhood in Edinburgh influenced his depiction of Victorian London is also explored. Stevenson’s language and techniques are analysed, linked closely to the text’s overarching themes of duality and deception. Questions are included for students, too. PowerPoint saved as PDF.

The PowerPoint can be edited and adapted allowing you to change any questions to suit your students. Try the free end of term quiz.

24 Extract Questions Jekyll and Hyde. AQA GCSE

(5)
This booklet contains over 24 exam style questions based on all the key extracts from Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Jekyll and Hyde’. Exam questions are worded in accordance with the latest GCSE English Literature 9-1 specification. Whilst I created this resource with AQA in mind, I’m sure this would prove useful for other exam boards too. Extracts are in chronological order, so students also revise plot and the development of themes/ideas as they tackle the questions. Each question is unique, meaning that the study guide covers all the major themes, events and characters in the novella. Ideal for all teachers as there are (obviously) very fewpast papers for the new specification. I reckon I’ve predicted a few future exam questions here! Visual aids for each chapter, and for certain extracts, are provided to help remind students of key events. There’s also a page of exam tips to help students produce more effective exam responses, containing content and analysis that examiners are specifically looking for. 40 pages jam packed with content. This would make the ideal companion to the study guide/student workbook I have produced on this novella (see shop) Ready to roll, everything a student needs to revise for the exam and boost their confidence in the run up to the exam. Little/no adaptation required and a guaranteed grade saver. Buy in confidence from a TES recommended gold author!
